Stephen Sondheim displays his work of whimsy and intellectual legerdemain on Into The Woods, and Masterworks Broadway has just pulled new photos from the MWB vault featuring Bernadette Peters, Chip Zien, Joanna Gleason and others from the original Broadway cast recording session. Trust Stephen Sondheim never to do anything twice. Having dealt in quick succession with a pointillist work (Sunday In The Park), a grand guignol drama (Sweeney Todd), and a Japanese-style show (Pacific Overtures), in connivance with James Lapine, he decided to approach the world of children's fairy tales, but with a twist all his own. The resulting musical was Into The Woods which opened on November 5, 1987 at the Martin Beck Theatre where it remained until it closed two years later after playing 764 performances. A work of whimsy and intellectual legerdemain, the show dealt with some familiar characters - the Baker and his wife, Cinderella and her Prince, Little Red Ridinghood, Rapunzel and her Prince, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, who all found themselves threatened when the wife of the Giant came down that fabled beanstalk to seek revenge for the death of her husband. The cast, led by Bernadette Peters as the Witch, did impressively well by Stephen Sondheim and brought to life some of the gorgeous tunes he had written for this occasion.
