Rich Villar: "...he hits every rubric for a successful oral poem while reaching deeper to not tell us he's proud of his heritages but leaving us with the lasting image of a son receiving bendicion from his ancestors and being sent out to continue the work." - Letras Latinas Blog, University of Notre Dame

Golda Solomon: "Poet Solomon...think of it as Jack Kerouac revisiting the mile high city and grabbing a sandwich at the New York Deli while in town." - Norman Provizer, Rocky Mountain News

"Po'Jazz at Cornelia Street is one big friendly party of good words, good sounds, and good food."
- Gladys Serrano, Mutable Music

Thu Oct 21st 8:30PM
MARK HELIAS TRIO
(Mark Helias, bass; Ellery Eskelin, tenor saxophone; Ches Smith, drums)

This engagement is an offshoot of my trio Open Loose and features a longtime collaborator, Ellery Eskelin on tenor saxophone and a drummer who is new to me Ches Smith. The pieces utilize the technique of modular taxis designed to generate responses and reactions from the participants on and off the stage. We will be performing mostly new and undocumented music.
"Mark Helias is one of the finest acoustic bass players in the contemporary jazz avant-garde, a guy who can play inside as well as out and who stretches the boundaries in both directions."
Will Layman Pop Matters
