Trees are machines. Some might think of a tree as an object, made of wood, covered in bark, but it’s not.

The philosopher Levi Bryant thinks of objects as machines, where a tree is defined not by what it has, but by what it does––the operations it makes, the inputs on which it draws, the transformation it performs, and the outcomes it produces.

Levi Bryant presents an expanded version of his lecture Difference Engines on Wednesday, November 14th at 7pm at The Artist's Institute. Space is limited.

The fifth season at The Artist’s Institute is dedicated to Haim Steinbach. The Artist's Institute is located at 163 Eldridge Street in New York City.
