The Jewish Theater of New York will present Kabbalah, a "comedy with music about mysticism, consumerism and the nature of faith."  The show begins previews on November 15th and 16th and opens on November 19th for an open-ended run at the Triad Theatre (158 W. 72nd St.).

Written and directed by Tuvia Tenenbom, the show "is equally inspired by both the history of Kabbalists and the red string bracelet trend that has taken hold of everyone from Britney Spears to Wal-Mart shoppers. Tenenbom's Kabbalah aims to explore the traditions of this mystical Jewish faith, its applications and metamorphoses in the modern world, as well as resulting implications for both the religion and its devotees."  The show features choreography by Kari Schroeder and musical composition by Andy Cohen.

The set design for Kabbalah is by renowned synagogue designer, Michael Berkowicz, whose projects include: Sutton Place Synagogue/Synagogue to the United Nations in New York City, B'nai Shalom in West Orange, NJ, Congregation Micah in Nashville, TN & Temple Israel, Orlando, FL.

Lighting for Kabbalah will be provided by the audience, whose members will get flashlights upon entering the theater. Tenenbom explains: "Because Kabbalah is part of the esoteric world, by definition it requires that we take action to unveil its secrecy amd see its light. It might be erratic at times, but I hope that theatergoers will appreciate the chance to search for their truth on their own." Elgie C. Johnson provides the costumes design.

The show will feature in its cast Mario Golden, Emily Stern, Oliver Conant, Ahmed Yassin, Michael Shimkin, Alison Ritchie and Adam Hayes.

"The Jewish Theater of New York (JTNY) marks its twelfth year of operation as the only English speaking Jewish theater in the tri-state area.  The JTNY develops and produces theater that explores contemporary and supremely relevant social issues affecting Jewish communities throughout the world and their non-Jewish neighbors.  Whether play or musical, comedy or drama, the JTNY's productions continually offer thought-provoking perspectives on Jewish culture, identity and history and inspire unique consideration and dialogue among satisfied audience members.  Outside the United States, The JTNY presents its shows in the language of its host countries."

"As befitting a show about Jewish mystics, people who delight in midnight meditations ("Tikkun Hatsot"), Kabbalah will play in the later hours of the night to allow the audience the chance to meditate after the show." The schedule for Kabbalah is: Tuesday and Wednesday at 9:00pm, and Saturday at 11:00pm. Press notes say that "And, yes, there will also a performance on Christmas Eve, the 24th of Dec., to provide a venue for those who do not celebrate this holiday for one reason or another."

Tickets are $49/$26 (students with valid ID).  To purchase them, call TheaterMania at (212)352-3101 or visit www.theatermania.com.  For more information, visit www.JewishTheater.org.
