Joyce Theater Announces 2011 Spring / Summer Season

Audiences will have the opportunity to see a full spectrum of dance companies, local and international, on The Joyce Theater stage during its 2011 spring / summer season. The Joyce, the nation's most prestigious home for modern dance, will welcome back audience favorites and introduce dance lovers to companies that have never before performed on its stage.

...WORLD FLAVOR...

Making its highly anticipated U.S. debut with a national tour that includes a two-week stop at The Joyce will be Cuba's Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, who will provide audiences with the extraordinary opportunity to see this fifty year-old company perform two exhilarating programs that showcase its Afro-Cuban and contemporary influenced movement style. Elsewhere from around the world, Cisne Negro, from Sao Paolo, Brazil, will present an eclectic program that includes performances by guest artist American Ballet Theatre principal, Marcelo Gomes. Brazil will also be represented by DanceBrazil, which returns to The Joyce with A Jornada, Artistic Director Jelon Viera's landmark work.

...LOCALLY GROWN...

The roster of NYC-based companies appearing on The Joyce stage this summer and spring is extraordinary. A season highlight will be the week-long appearance of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in its final Joyce season before disbanding in December 2011 at the end of its two-year Legacy Tour. Two of these companies will celebrate anniversary seasons, and several will perform world premieres. The season will open with Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, celebrating its 25th Anniversary with an engagement that features a world-premiere set to music by Stevie Wonder. Also celebrating an anniversary this year - its 30th - is Elisa Monte Dance, presenting a world premiere in a program that consists of company works from each of its three decades. Returning in June will be RIOULT, featuring a world premiere set to music by Pulitzer prize-winning composer Aaron Jay Kernis. Buglisi Dance Theatre will perform a program that includes a world premiere, as well as Requiem, set to Fauré's soaring Mass. Armitage Gone! Dance, will present a program that includes a collaboration between the company and featured artists from the Dance Theatre of Harlem ensemble. Highlighting KEIGWIN + COMPANY will be a world premiere of an evening-length work that features music by electro-acoustic composer and cellist Chris Lancaster and pianist Jerome Begin. Underland, an evening-length work inspired by the bittersweet songs of Australian balladeer Nick Cave, will be on tap for this year's engagement of the Stephen Petronio Company. Doug Varone & Dancers will return with the New York premiere of its acclaimed work Chapters from a Broken Novel, with live accompaniment. And international superstar of tap, Savion Glover, will make fireworks on The Joyce stage during a three-week engagement that includes the 4th of July. Following the success of last summer's presentation of four female choreographers, the newly-minted Gotham Dance Festival will feature the return of the choreographers Kate Weare and Monica Bill Barnes, along with Patrick Corbin and Brian Brooks. The Festival will also present six emerging artists in Summer Sampler Matinees

....NATIONAL PRIDE...

Numerous cities across the United States will be represented at The Joyce this spring, beginning with two cities in one company: Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, celebrating its 15th Anniversary season this year with the east coast premiere of Spanish choreographer Cayetano Soto's new ballet, Uneven. From San Francisco, ODC Dance will present the New York premiere of Waving Not Drowning during its week-long engagement. Up from Philadelphia, Philadanco, the 41-year old company led by dance icon Joan Myers Brown, will premiere Ray Mercer's Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. And audience favorite, Connecticut-based Pilobolus will return with its annual four-week summer season which will include three programs, including startling collaborations with Takuya Muramatsu, the principal choreographer from Dairakudakan, the butoh company from Japan, OK Go, the hot rock n' roll band and, flying robots from MIT's Distributed Robotics Laboratory Flight Team.

In the world premiere of Letters of Love on Ripped Paper, Buglisi reveals the rapture and human complexity underlying human relationships through a labyrinth of love letters: Pliny to Calpurnia; Queen Victoria to Prince Albert; Zelda to Scott. Elisa Monte Dance celebrates its 30th anniversary by taking bold steps towards the future with the world premiere of Monte's Dialogue with Vanishing Languages. The program also includes EMD works from each landmark decade that carry with them the depth and richness of American contemporary dance. Since electrifying the dance world in 1981 when Alvin Ailey brought her seminal work, Treading into his repertory, Ms. Monte has been revered for her choreography of elaborate lifts and athletic leaps interwoven with complex patterns and knotty groupings of bodies. The season is dedicated to long-time EMD board member and friend, Denise Jefferson, whose life and years of service to the company will be remembered for the next thirty years and beyond.

Doug Varone and his exquisite dancers take the Joyce stage for the much-anticipated New York premiere of their acclaimed new work, Chapters from a Broken Novel. Kindled by a bold cinematic score by David Van Tieghem, Varone's Chapters reveals a world teeming with everyday moments exposed for their beauty and rawness. Illuminated with humor and pathos, these twenty-two episodes are vivid, physically charged renderings of human interaction in spheres both public and private. With bold strokes of movement mingled with detailed intimate gesture, Varone once again paints human portraits with the nuance and complexity that has made him one of his generation's most compelling dancemakers. The Merce Cunningham Dance Company's first Joyce season, taking place in 1984, featured a ten-day series of Cunningham's signature Events, in which Cunningham and his dancers performed to live music by company musicians John Cage, Takehisa Kisugi, and David Tudor. For this, its final Joyce season before disbanding in December 2011 at the end of its two-year Legacy Tour, the company will give audiences the extraordinary opportunity to see Cunningham's choreography performed by the final group of dancers he personally trained in a repertory program that has not been seen in New York for decades. This profoundly moving engagement will include two Cunningham masterworks--CRWDSPCR and Quartet, and will conclude with Antic Meet, an iconic piece, not seen since 1969, that captures the exuberant and collaborative spirit that existed between the choreographer and Robert Rauschenberg.

The "high-octane, high-flying" (The New York Times) energy of DanceBrazil takes center stage at The Joyce when the company returns for its 2011 season, with A Jornada (The Path), Artistic Director Jelon Vieira's landmark work that premiered at The Joyce in 2001. A Jornada follows the path of Africans to Brazil, using the Afro-Brazilian traditional art form of Capoeira as the base, the link to, and an expression of the struggle and liberation of Afro-Brazilian culture.

Karole Armitage and her stunning post-modern ballet company, Armitage Gone! Dance return to The Joyce for a two-week engagement, presenting two programs revealing her unique sensibility that at once embraces classical values and, as reflected in her Tony-nominated choreography for Hair, then knocks them askew. Hailed by the San Francisco Examiner for its "exuberant repertory...daredevil intensity and considerable emotional candor," ODC/Dance returns to The Joyce with its ten magnificent dancers to celebrate the company's 40th anniversary. Artistic Director and Founder Brenda Way presents the New York premiere of Waving Not Drowning (A Guide to Elegance), her wry treatment of culture, fashion, manners and feminine perspectives set to a commissioned score by Pamela Z. The program also includes Co-Artistic Director KT Nelson‘s piece Grassland, performed to a commissioned score by Marcelo Zarvos; and Way's shape-shifting piece In the Memory of the Forest, named one of the top ten dance pieces in San Francisco in 2009, that touches on her late mother-in-law's memories of flight from Warsaw in 1941.

Founded by Artistic Director Hulda Bittencourt in 1977, Cisne Negro Dance Company stays true to its Brazilian roots while adhering to a classic modern dance style that is "admirably disciplined and wildly energetic." (The New York Times). For its Joyce season, the first since 2005, the company will present an eclectic program that includes Flock, an exotic take on Stravinsky's Firebird and Sabiá, a classic Cisne Negro piece that premiered in 1988 and features a divine combination of pointe shoes and contemporary movement performed to music created by Tom Jobim and Chico Buarque de Holanda, renowned Brazilian composers. As a special treat, ABT principal Marcelo Gomes appears in both Sabiá and in a solo work.

DANCE CHATS
The Joyce Theater holds free post-performance dialogues (formerly called "Humanities") with artistic directors and/or company members following the performance on the first Wednesday of each company's engagement. These dialogues are open to all audience members attending that evening's performance.

FAMILY MATINEES
Created to help build dance audiences for the future, The Joyce's popular family-oriented performance series will return this fall with three family-friendly matinees, each followed by a special chance to meet the artists. Kids' tickets are only $10. Children who see two of the three family matinees automatically become Joyce Junior Members and save 40% on the price of their tickets ($10 reduced to $6). Children, ages 6-14, must be accompanied by an adult (maximum four kids to one grownup). Joyce Junior Members get a special "Backstage-at-the-Joyce" tour, a T-shirt and gift coupons.

DANCE TALKS AT JOYCE SOHO
The Joyce Theater will continue its popular "Dance Talks" series this spring on March 14 from 6-8pm with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. These conversations between artists and audiences provide an informal, but in-depth examination of issues shaping dance today. The Joyce Theater Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization, has proudly served the dance community and its audiences since 1982. The founders, Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, acquired and renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea, which opened as The Joyce Theater in 1982. The Joyce is named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. The Joyce's Commissioning Program is supported, in part, by the Stephen and Cathy Weinroth Fund for New Work. The Joyce's presentations of international dance companies are supported, in part, by The R. Britton Fisher and Family Gift for International Dance. The Joyce's Dance Education Program is supported, in part, by the Charles E. Culpeper Endowment Fund and the Constance Sanders Fund for Dance Education.
