Josh Gad, Cynthia Erivo Team Up for Musical RIP VAN WINKLE Film

Cynthia Erivo and Josh Gad are teaming up for a musical film take on the American folk story Rip Van Winkle, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Warner Bros. film will be written by Amanda Idoko, based off of Gad's idea. The songwriting team of Kate Anderson and Elissa Samsel have also signed on for the musical. Erivo is set to star in the untitled film.

Gad will produce with Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback. Ryan Halprin of Rideback will exec produce with Erivo.

Rip van Winkle was a short story written by Washington Irving and is a story from the time of THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION that helped lend a mythic air to colonial America. The story is about a villager who falls asleep only to wake up decades later and missing the American Revolution, and is a cautionary tale of sleeping one's life away.

Details of Gad's take on the story has not been released. Gad will produce with Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback. Cynthia Erivo will executive producer with Ryan Halprin of Rideback.

Erivo is a Tony winner for her starring role in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple. She recently starred in the Steve McQueen crime drama Widows and in Drew Goddard's film, Bad Times at the El Royale.

Gad is a Tony nominee for his role as Elder Cunningham in Broadway's Book of Mormon. He most recently appeared in the Murder on the Orient Express and is currently working on Frozen 2.
