The Open Book will present its first production of the season: Reconstruction, a new play about the effects of breast cancer on a couple's marriage and sex life written by Clifford Lee Johnson III with Jane Alice Kelley and directed by Tom Coash. Johnson is also featured in the play along with Alice King. Performances will run Thursday through Saturday evenings at 8:15pm beginning October 27th through November 19th at the 78th Street Theatre Lab.

Reconstruction "tells the story about Ally and Ford, a wife and husband whose love is tested when Ally is diagnosed with breast cancer. After a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation and reconstructive surgery the couple is shaken—emotionally and in the bedroom. Determined to reclaim their former sex life, they stock up on iced champagne and Egyptian love oil. In the process, their bare themselves not only physically, but psychologically. The staging features nudity and frank sexual situations," according to press notes.

Johnson is the Director of Musical Development at Manhattan Theatre Club. The first staging of Reconstruction was presented at the 2004 New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC). During its 2004 FringeNYC run, Johnson was required to step in at the last minute for one of the actors, and he reprises the role of Ford for The Open Book's new production under the direction of Coash (Cry Havoc).

Founded in 1975, The Open Book is "New York's oldest professional readers theatre company whose mission is to present the best of all worlds of literature—prose, poetry, drama and even nonfiction—to culturally diverse audiences with an emphasis on new under-appreciated literature and works of excellence."

Tickets are $15 for general admission. For reservations, please call (212) 362-9014. The 78th Street Theatre Lab is located at 236 West 78th Street, just East of Broadway on the Upper West Side.
