John & Russell's THE UNION Debuts at #3

By: Oct. 28, 2010

Elton John and Leon Russell's acclaimed new CD The Union debuts at #3 on Billboard's Top 200 Album Chart, ahead of new releases from Rod Stewart, Shakira, Bob Dylan and the new Glee Soundtrack. The Union also made significant debuts on additional Billboard Charts including #2 Rock Album, #3 Internet Album and #5 Digital Album respectively.  Released on Decca on October 19th, the album was launched with the duo making a slew of high-profile appearances including multiple mornings on Good Morning America, a performance on The View, a live concert broadcast on Fuse from New York City's Beacon Theatre and a touching profile on NPR's Morning Edition.

Unanimous critical acclaim has poured in for The Union:

"Mr. Russell, at age 68, is back with his talent intact.  His twangy voice is strong, his three solo compositions first-rate, as are the songs he wrote with Mr. John and Mr. John's longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin.  Which leads to another reason "The Union" is such a treat: It's a new album by Mr. John, who contributes to every track, including several on which he sings alone.  The seven new John/Taupin compositions are at least comparable to anything they've done in decades.  Elton John is back, too."  The Wall Street Journal

"Stepping out of each other's way, the best collaborators break their own patterns and surprise themselves.  That happens for Elton John and Leon Russell, the stars of this rambling, charming album...."  The Los Angeles Times

Produced by Oscar and multiple-Grammy winning producer T Bone Burnett, The Union was recorded live in the studio with Elton and Leon on dueling pianos, and includes guest vocals by  icons Neil Young and BrIan Wilson, along with legendary R&B organist Booker T. Jones, steel guitarist Robert Randolph and a 10-piece gospel choir.
