'Gilbert & Sullivan' Actor John Reed Dies at Age 94

John Reed, best known for his work on numerous Gilbert and Sullivan productions, died at the age of 94 on February 13th, his 94th birthday. Reed was known for his stage work and was specifically noted for being one of the best at handling the Gilbert and Sullivan patter song.

Reed is known for his long-standing relationship with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. He played ensemble roles in a number of productions including Trail by Jury, The Yeomen of the Guard, and The Gondoliers. Reed was granted the role of principal comedian of the company when Peter Pratt left in 1959. From there, Reed's career skyrocketed as the lead in a number of productions. Reed was noted for roles such as Ko-Ko inThe Mikado, Sir Joseph Porter in H.M.S. Pinafore, Major-General Stanley in The Pirates of Penzance, and the Duke of Plaza-Toro in The Gondoliers.

In 1977, Reed played before Queen Elizabeth II for her Slber Jubilee Command Performance at Windsor Castle. In the same year, Reed received the honor of receiving the Order of the British Empire. Reed left the D'Oyly company in 1979, after a 20-year relationship with the group.

Reed is survived by his life partner, Nicholas Kerri.
