Living up to its name as an "American Cultural Ambassador to the World,' Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was warmly and wildly greeted by audiences in packed houses and with standing ovations this summer on a ten-week international tour that marked the historic passing of the Artistic Director mantle to Robert Battle. Now, this new era in Ailey history will excite audiences in the U.S. as Ailey's extraordinary dancers return to the New York City Center stage from November 30, 2011 - January 1, 2012, with performances that are a joyous holiday tradition. "This is the beginning of a new adventure-for the company, for me and for our audiences around the world," stated Robert Battle.

A star-studded gala benefit at New York City Center will kick off the Ailey season on November 30th. Honorary Chairs for the special evening are First Lady Michelle Obama and legendary model, Iman. Nine-time Grammy Award-winner John Legend will join Ailey's Alicia Graf Mack in an exclusive live performance of "If It's Magic," choreographed by Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison to the timeless music of Stevie Wonder.

Ailey's pioneering legacy will expand in exciting directions with premieres and new productions that include the first Ailey performance of a work by American modern dance master Paul Taylor; Home, Rennie Harris' bold work that uses hip hop to celebrate the stories of people living with or affected by HIV premiering on World AIDS Day; Takademe, a signature work by the company's new leader; and renowned American-Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin's Minus 16 that explores improvisation and audience participation. With Robert Battle's commitment to honoring the past while looking towards the future, Alvin Ailey's classic masterpiece, Revelations, will be performed with an extended cast of 50 and live music on special programs during the five-week New York engagement.

Experience the inspiring "Ailey spirit" this December - Ailey's first season led by Artistic Director Robert Battle is not to be missed! Tickets starting at $25 are on sale and can be purchased online at www.alvinailey.org or www.nycitycenter.org.
