John-Andrew Morrison Joins the Cast of AREA D at the 2026 Criminal Queerness Festival

John-Andrew Morrison (A Strange Loop, Tony Award nominee; Oh, Mary!) has joined the cast of LOUR's Arab-pop musical Area D, as part of National Queer Theater’s Criminal Queerness Festival at HERE Arts Center in June. The festival is the official theater event of NYC Pride. Tony Award-winner Osh Ashruf (Guthrie Theater’s The Ruins) will direct.

In AREA D, a group of young Palestinian friends come together to form a band that lands an unexpected shot on the Eurovision stage. What starts as a lucky break spirals into a glitter-drenched spectacle, forcing the band to confront how far they will go to get their voices heard and save one of their own. AREA D is a bold, genre-smashing musical fusing Arab pop, punk, and electronic sounds.

Morrison joins the cast alongside Nadia Dandashi (Suffs), Abubakr Ali (Anything’s Possible), Amelia Prochaska, and Nick Abouzeid, who were all previously announced.

In addition to Ashruf, the creative team includes: Déa Thatcher, Music Director; Nikhil Saboo, Movement Director; Forest Entsminger, Scenic/Props Designer; Jasmine Canjura, Costume Designer; Maryam Sweirki, Lighting Designer; Jeremy Kadetsky, Sound Designer; Alan Mendez, Orchestrator; Jesse Cameron Alick, Dramaturg; Fuyuan Zheng, Production Stage Manager; Dmitri Barcomi, Production Manager. Casting is by Peter Dunn.

NYC Pride's official theater event, the Criminal Queerness Festival is a co-production of National Queer Theater and HERE Arts Center. Performances of Area D will run from June 10th to 13th at HERE Arts Center.
