Hairspray Welcomes Back Winokur on June 13th

Marissa Jaret Winokur, who originated the role of Tracy Turnblad, will return to Hairspray for a four-week stint beginning on June 13th.

Winokur left the show on August 10th, 2003, after starring as the Baltimore dynamo for a year and scoring the 2003 Best Actress in a Musical Tony in the process. She also played Tracy in the LA premiere of the musical.

Recently, Winokur has been concentrating on her film and television career; she plays alongside Pamela Anderson on the Fox sitcom Stacked. She recently appeared in the big screen comedy Fever Pitch, and other film credits include Now You Know, Scary Movie, American Beauty (as the drive-through girl), Teaching Mrs. Tingle and Never Been Kissed. Her TV appearances include roles on such shows as Boston Public, Just Shoot Me, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Dharma and Greg. Winokur was also a replacement for Jan in the 1994 revival of
Grease.

Bruce Vilanch currently plays Edna Turnblad in Hairspray, while Carly Jibson portrays Tracy. Also in the cast are Todd Susman as Wilbur, Richard H. Blake as Link, Chester Gregory II as Seaweed, Jordan Ballard as Amber von Tussle, Tracey Miller as Penny Pingleton, Mary Bond Davis as Motormouth Maybelle and Barbara Walsh as Velma.

Hairspray, based on John Waters' 1988 film, began previews on July 18th, 2002 before opening at the Neil Simon Theatre on August 15th, 2002. In addition to Winokur's win, the musical garnered 7 other Tonys, including Best Musical, Best Original Score for Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, Best Book of a Musical for Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, Best Direction of a Musical for Jack O'Brien, and Best Actor in a Musical for Harvey Fierstein.
