HAIRSPRAY Heads to Madrid!; Open Auditions Announced

Multi-awarded musical Hairspray will arrive at last in Madrid, produced by Videomedia. The production has announced open auditions for the roles of Motormouth Maybell, Seaweed Stubbs, Inez, Dynamites, Duane, Gilbet and Thad, in this first round.

Performers are invited to send their resumes and recent picture to tandem.guionistas@gmail.com.

Character descriptions are as follows:

Motormouth Maybelle: Female. 30-50. The owner of a downtown record shop and the host of "Negro Day" on The Corny Collins Show, self-described as "big, blonde and beautiful".

Seaweed Stubbs: Male. 15-20. A hip "Negro Day" dancer and the son of Motormouth Maybelle who falls in love with Penny.

Little Inez: Female. 14-19. Seaweed's younger sister, who tries to audition for The Corny Collins Show but is turned away because she is black.

Dynamites: Female. 18-50. 3 Afro-American/Caribbean/mixed race women - strong singers with some dancing

Hairspray, which celebrated its sixth anniversary on Broadway in August 2008, is the winner of eight 2003 Tony Awards, including best musical, best actor, best actress, best featured actor, best score, best book, best director, and best costume design. Hairspray also swept every one of the year's best musical awards, winning, in addition to the Tony, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, and the Drama League Award.
