Girl Be Heard's Jessica Greer Morris Honored by SELF Magazine

Girl Be Heard's ( and Executive Director Jessica Greer Morris, is a recipient of SELF Magazine's 2013 Women Doing Good Award which will also recognize Shakira, Padma Lakshmi, Scandal's Katie Lowes at Apella, 450 East 29th Street, in New York City, hosted by The Today's Show's Hoda Kotb.

Each year, SELF magazine honors women who have dedicated their lives to improving the lives of others: globally, nationally and within their communities. More info:

"This huge honor validates our work as teachers and mentors at Girl Be Heard," says Morris. "I dedicate this award to every one of the courageous Girl Be Heard actors, writers and spoken word poets who use theatre to speak out for change, whether they are survivors of bullying, incest, gun violence or sex trafficking."

"Jessica is a selfless leader who gives of herself tirelessly to impact girls personally and globally," says Monique Coleman, United Nations youth Champion and renowned star of High School Musical. "Jessica inspires all of us to step outside of our comfort zones and use our gifts for good. She is an inspiration to me."

Under Morris's leadership, Girl Be Heard's company of young women (most of whom are from underserved areas of New York City) have performed at the White House, State Department, United Nations and in schools, community centers and theatres across the country. In addition to being named one of Newsweek's "150 Fearless Women Who Shake The World" last year, Morris has received critical acclaim for her work with Girl Be Heard in The New York Times, The New Yorker, NPR, Ebony Magazine, Backstage, Huffington Post, WBAI, NY1, WNBC, and outlets across the globe.
