Cyrille Aimee: A Sondheim Adventure

Jazz vocalist Cyrille Aimée takes a deep dive into the Stephen Sondheim songbook for her scintillating new album, Move On: A Sondheim Adventure (Mack Avenue). What began as a celebration of a legendary Broadway songwriter became a work of cathartic autobiography as one song after another captured her deepest personal feelings. Cyrille's culturally rich background - Dominican and French Gypsy - and conservatory training, form the rhythmic and expressive foundation of her art. At the young age of thirty-four, she has become one of the most distinctive voices in jazz.

KT Sullivan at the Birdland Theater

Birdland Theater is proud to announce that singer KT Sullivan will perform four very special shows, "I Can Cook: When Barbara Met Wall". In "I Can Cook," KT pays tribute to both Barbara and Wally, and the amazing journey that began when they met. Featuring "Sing A Song With Me" and "It's Better With A Band" (both written by Harper) as well as classics arranged by Wally for Barbara such as "Dancing In The Dark," "Wait Till You See Him," "Sweet Georgia Brown," "I Love A Piano," "Come In From The Rain," "If Love Were All," and "I Can Cook." Eric Michael Gillett directs, and Jon Weber musical directs.

Sara Gazarek at the Birdland Theater

Jazz vocalist Sara Gazarek will perform an exclusive preview of the music from her highly anticipated upcoming release "Thirsty Ghost." This special run of shows will feature Sara's compelling and signature re-workings of songs from the Great American Songbook, her own compelling original compositions, and a handful of reimagined contemporary songs (Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Nick Drake, etc). Sara will be joined on stage by Julian Shore (piano), Matt Aronoff (bass) and Matt Wilson (drums).

Papo Vazquez Mighty Pirates Troubadours

Trombonist, composer and arranger Papo Vázquez has 40+ years of career spanning Jazz, Latin, Afro Caribbean and Classical music. Vázquez was always deeply moved by Jazz, and specifically cites the music of John Coltrane and J.J. Johnson as having most influenced him. In addition, his appreciation and knowledge of the indigenous music of the Caribbean provides him with a unique ability to fuse Afro-Caribbean rhythms, specifically those from Puerto Rico, with freer melodic and harmonic elements of progressive jazz. The Mighty Pirates Troubadours continues to allow Vázquez the opportunity to blend multi-faceted compositions and trombone style with rhythms of Afro Caribbean origins and Jazz.

New York: Big City Songbook at the Birdland Theater

Birdland Theater is proud to announce that "New York: Big City Songbook," will return to the stage on Sundays, March 3, April 14, May 12, June 23, July 14, and August 11. The show stars Birdland favorites Klea Blackhurst, LaTanya Hall, Nicolas King and Jay Leonhart. Why have so many songwriters been compelled to write about New York? What is it about this city that fuels an endless supply of stories? This show offers a kaleidoscopic vision of life in the city, from the inspiring and romantic to the aggravating and the quirky. Created, scripted and hosted by Deborah Grace Winer.

George Abud & Katrina Lenk: Swung

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to announce that Tony winner Katrina Lenk will join forces with her friend and former cast member from The Band's Visit, George Abud in a one-night only concert called "Swung." In a celebration of their musical friendship, Broadway pals George Abud and Katrina Lenk meld together an evening of smoky jazz and swinging bebop. Exploring the music of the heart, they will dive into sizzling and lush tunes from the likes of Nina Simone, Thelonius Monk, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, and Rosemary Clooney. Together with a 5-piece band under musical direction by Andrei Strizek, with James Abud on guitar, Alexandra Eckhardt on bass, Sam Sadigursky on reeds and Allison Miller on drums, this will be a dreamy, madcap soirée of talk and tunes.

Nellie McKay at the Birdland Theater

Idiosyncratic vocalist and song stylist Nellie McKay is equally comfortable on a Broadway stage (Old Hats, Threepenny Opera), in concert, in films, and on the small screen, where her music has been featured in Boardwalk Empire, Weeds, Grey's Anatomy and other popular shows. For this engagement Nellie celebrates the release of her 7th album, "Sister Orchid," the second collaboration with famed Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick.

Yvette Norwood-Tiger at the Birdland Theater

Yvette Norwood-Tiger is an international jazz vocalist, recording artist, songwriter, vocal coach, The Recording Academy (GRAMMY) voting member, and founder/director of the Palm Beach International Jazz Festival Organization. Her CDs, A'LA ELLA! and whY NoT... Love, Peace, Joy, Jazz, features music from great composers such as Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, and the Gershwins. Yvette's general repertoire includes jazz standards, bebop, and Latin jazz. She performs with vocally clean and pure interpretations of the Great American Songbook, while emphasizing intonation and storytelling. Yvette performs jazz songs in six languages including English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Xhosa.

Adam Birnbaum at the Birdland Theater

Adam Birnbaum is emerging as one of the top young voices in jazz piano. Since arriving on the New York scene in 2003, he has become increasingly prominent performing in clubs and festivals around the world. A diverse performer, Adam regularly tours with The Al Foster Quartet and Darcy James Argue's Secret Society as well as frequently performing with the likes of Cecile McLorin Salvant, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and many other ensembles.

Brian Newman & the New Alchemy Jazz Orchestra

Singer/Trumpet Player Brian Newman & the New Alchemy Jazz Orchestra will perform originals, jazz standards and classics from the Great American Songbook. This 18-piece band will take you for a ride through an eclectic mix of composers and sounds from the past and present and future of jazz music. Jazz isn't what it used to be, but for trumpeter and vocalist Brian Newman, that's entirely the point. American trumpet legends like Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and Lee Morgan are already a part of music history. They're revered and loved in the way they should be. The New Alchemy Jazz Orchestra is an exciting 17-piece big band co-led by some of New York City's most inspiring young talent: John Lake (trumpet), Mike Sailors (trumpet), Steve Kortyka (sax), and Danny Jonokuchi (trumpet and conductor).

David DeJesus Quartet at the Birdland Theater

Saxophonist David DeJesus has been on the New York City Jazz scene since the late 90's and has established himself as a key player in numerous bands in various genres. In Jazz, David has performed with the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars, and Jimmy Heath's Big Band along with many others. In Latin Jazz and Salsa, David has shared the stage with Ruben Blades, Larry Harlow, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Artro O'Farrill and Tito Rodriguez Jr. Currently, David is the leader of the Birdland Big Band, a member of the Grammy nominated Bobby Sanabria Big Band, and the Legendary Ron Carter's Great Big Band. The quartet includes David DeJesus (saxophone), Donald Vega (piano), Doug Weiss (bass) and Chris Smith (drums).

Harmony on Broadway

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to present "Harmony on Broadway," created and arranged by Jake Odmark. A bevy of Broadway performers will star, including Kirstin Maldonado, John Riddle, Alysha Deslorieux, Jacob Keith Watson, Raymond J Lee, Natalie Weiss, Max Chernin, Joel Waggoner, Laura Chapman, Vishal Vaidya, Florrie Bagel, J. Harrison Ghee and Elena Shaddow. "Harmony on Broadway" will celebrate beloved show-tunes, rearranged with new and innovative harmonies. Jake Odmark (Kinky Boots, Pretty Woman), the musical mind behind the hit Broadway vocal trio Apollo Link, serves up some unique sounds as he re-voices some of Broadway's best hits. Jake has been a choral and a cappella clinician for the past 15 years and is finally bringing his aural art to Broadway!

Will Reynolds at the Birdland Theater

Birdland Theater is proud to announce that actor/writer Will Reynolds, along with a bevy of Broadway singers, will perform a concert of his songs. Will Reynolds is a Brooklyn-based actor and writer, and has written the music for The Violet Hour, Radioactive, Around the World, and The Sixth Borough, all with Eric Price. Will is the composer/creator of The Greenwood Tree (based on the Sonnets by Shakespeare), recently developed by the Stratford Festival in Canada. His song cycle Poems & Moon Songs has been produced as part of the Lincoln Center Songbook Series, and the song "Tavern" (text by Edna St. Vincent Millay) was featured on 6-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald's album GO BACK HOME. Acting credits include: Daddy Long Legs (Off Broadway, directed by John Caird), Passion at Classic Stage Company (directed by John Doyle, cast album on PS Classics), Tony Kushner's The Illusion (Signature Theater, directed by Michael Mayer), Emma at The Old Globe, Love Story at the Walnut Street Theatre, Big River at Goodspeed, A Room With A View at Seattle's Fifth Avenue, and the North American Tour of Mamma Mia! Jenna Esposito: The Sixties Chicks at the Birdland Theater

In this brand-new show, vocalist Jenna Esposito takes the audience on a rollicking romp through some of the biggest hits of the 1960's, all made popular by female vocalists. From "girl group" songs by the Crystals ("And Then He Kissed Me") and the Chiffons ("One Fine Day"), to the hits of Dusty Springfield ("You Don't Have To Say You Love Me"), Lesley Gore ("It's My Party"), and Connie Francis ("Where The Boys Are"), this show will have audiences singing, bopping, and "Dancing In The Streets!" For this show, Jenna will be backed by her four-piece band, led by musical director, Fortune Esposito on guitar, as well as Kelly Esposito-Broelmann and Rob Langeder on background vocals.

Vincent Herring: History of Jazz

Saxophonist Vincent Herring's intense, soulful, multi-noted style and ebullient swing have excited audiences worldwide. On stage, Herring and his band often make an incendiary sound over fine and controlled rhythms of modern times. His extensive guest soloist appearances include performances with Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center and Jon Faddis and The Carnegie Hall Big Band. Vincent's discography reveals over 20 titles as a leader and over 250 as a sideman. His current and past projects speak to the wide range of his musical interest and versatility: The Vincent Herring-Joris Dudli's Soul Jazz Alliance, Earth Jazz Agents, Friendly Fire with Vincent Herring and Eric Alexander. Vincent leads a band called Jazz The Story with Jon Faddis, Jeremy Pelt, Steve Turre, James Carter, Eric Alexander, Mike LeDonne, Kenny Davis, Carl Allen and NicolasBearde.

Pete Malinverni Trio: On The Town at the Birdland Theater

Pianist, composer, educator Pete Malinverni has been a fixture on the New York City Jazz scene and will be performing the music of Leonard Bernstein. He has recorded fourteen times as a leader, including in solo piano, trio, quartet, quintet, big band and choral contexts. All his recordings have been received by critics and the public alike and have seen heavy air play on all platforms, from the radio to the internet. Throughout his time in NYC, Pete has established performing, recording and inspirational contact with a host of masters on the scene there, including Joe Lovano, Vernel Fournier, Charles Davis, Mel Lewis, Dennis Irwin, Jon Faddis, Karrin Allyson, Steve Wilson and many, many others. These experiences have convinced him that music must be treated as a sacred gift, to be passed on freely to fellow musicians and listeners, with passionate control. Ehud Asherie: "Wild Man Blues" Album Release

Ehud Asherie is a jazz pianist who integrates the venerable New York piano tradition into his inventive style. Asherie has since worked with a broad range of musicians including: Eric Alexander, Roy Ayers, Peter Bernstein, Jesse Davis, Bobby Durham, Vince Giordano, Wycliffe Gordon, Scott Hamilton, Ryan Kisor, Jane Monheit, Catherine Russell, Ken Peplowski and Clark Terry. Beyond his dedication to jazz music, Ehud Asherie has also developed a passion for traditional Brazilian music. His appreciation and profound knowledge of the music, language and culture are the foundation of Asherie's project entitled Bina & Ehud, a duo formed in 2003, with Brazilian guitarist, Bina Coquet. Joining Asherie are Peter Washington (Bass) and Rodney Green (Drums).

Bobby LaVell Jazz Orchestra

Bobby began his professional career performing, arranging and conducting for Memphis singer Lee Stone. He continued to develop his performing career by serving long stints as a regular with the phenomenal BB King and Ray Charles. Bobby has also performed with such fixtures as The Temptations, The Four Tops, and The Nicholas Brothers. With his own intuition Bobby founded and leads "The Bobby LaVell Jazz Orchestra", formally "The Hudson River Jazz Orchestra". Bobby' s talents are to say the least, a man who is full of inspiration and enormous talent, as a saxophonist, Bobby LaVell's sound, technique and articulation are second to none. As a composer his works are poignant and inspiring. As a person, he is solid, and as an artist he is phenomenal.

Matt Baker

Jazz pianist Matt Baker returns to the Birdland stage with the world premiere of a brand-new project: Gershwin, like you've never heard it. Mr. Baker will present a whole new spin on the music one of America's most celebrated composers, with an all-star lineup from the heart of New York's jazz scene. Comprising music from Crazy for You, Porgy and Bess and An American in Paris, plus other exciting gems from the classical and popular worlds of George Gershwin! Mark Soskin at the Birdland Theater

Since 1981 Soskin has resided in New York City, remaining active as sideman and as a leader. His recording, "17" on TCB, highlights Soskin in a quintet setting featuring mainly original compositions. He continues to maintain a busy tour schedule as well as giving master classes and workshops. He has performed the premier of contemporary classical music composer John Adams' opera, "Ceiling/Sky" at Lincoln Center. Joining Mark are Jay Anderson (Bass) and Obed Calvarie (Drums).

Patricia Barber

From her early days leading a jazz trio in small Chicago nightclubs, Patricia Barber has drawn extravagant accolades. The praise came at first from local writers, impressed by her unique arrangements and coolly composed piano improvisations. As she added vocals to her repertoire, the praise poured in from national reviewers intoxicated by her recordings. And when (after years of international touring) she began to focus on her own compositions, kudos arrived from new fans, besotted by her lapidary lyrics and her often indelible imagery. In recent years, she has released two volumes of music recorded at the Green Mill, available on her own label.

Karen Mason: For the First Time at the Birdland Theater

After more than a year in the North American premier tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Love Never Dies, playing Madame Giry to standing ovations, Karen is thrilled to be home in NYC and returning to her love of cabaret. With her Director Barry Kleinbort, and her Music Director Christopher Denny, Karen's all-new show will feature songs written by the songwriters she has known throughout her career. Some of these songs were written for her, some were demos, and some will be included just because she likes the songs! Kristina Koller Quartet at the Birdland Theater

As a vocalist, arranger and composer Kristina fearlessly pushes 'vocal jazz' into different directions adding interesting flavors and textures to create her unique sound. Evidenced in her widely acclaimed 2018 debut album 'Perception', her music is both timeless and contemporary, melding different genres together and uplifting old jazz standards to a refreshing direction. Her latest EP release 'At The Poli Club' captures a snippet of her live show. It exemplifies her extraordinary and expressive vocal dynamics in its purest form, doing what she does best - performing and producing music without bounds. Her approach enlightens young as well as older audiences, giving traditional jazz music an enticing uplift and making it easily embraced for all musical tastes. Frank Vignola Quartet at the Birdland Theater

Tali Rubimstein and Friends

Join us for an evening of jazz classics featuring a surprising instrument: the recorder! Award winning Recorder virtuoso Tali Rubinstein will create a unique concert experience shining a spotlight on this ancient instrument with a rich history and surprising versatility. Rubinstein is joined by a five-piece band and will bend the limits of her antique wooden flute in a show that explores jazz in addition to soul and world music.

Jane Scheckter "I've (still) Got My Standards" at the Birdland Theater

Jane Scheckter recorded her first album, "I've Got My Standards" with Mike Renzi, Jay Leonhart and Grady Tate in 1988. This 30th anniversary reunion is a tribute to Grady, who passed away last year. The album received rave reviews from the New York press as well as from Billboard, Jazziz, Stereo Review and Downbeat. She divides her singing time between New York, Paris and the French Riviera.

T. Oliver Reid Celebrates Bobby Short at the Birdland Theater

T. Oliver Reid is a MAC, Bistro and Julie Wilson Award winning recording artist with twelve Broadway shows to his credit, including the critically acclaimed 2018 Tony Award-winner for Best Revival, Once On This Island. On what would have been nightclub legend Bobby Short's 94th birthday, cabaret and Broadway artist T. Oliver Reid will celebrate the man with a concert entitled, "Distingué...The Songs of the Saloon Singer."

Kristen Lee Sergeant "Smolder" Album Release at the Birdland Theater

Kristen Lee Sergeant is a jazz vocalist and composer of effervescent energy, musical intensity, and dramatic flair. She is among the few jazz musicians who commit to telling a story in her music and performance style while sparking spontaneous sonic conversation with her fellow musicians. Smolder, her newest release, is an arrival of Kristen as a songwriter, arranger, and a creative improviser. Incorporating cello, alto flute, and percussion, the album expresses the feelings of fire from extinguished to blazing in an intensely personal and dynamic way. The band, comprised of some of the best musicians in jazz (Ted Nash, Cameron Brown, Jeb Patton, Jody Redhage Ferber, Jay Sawyer, Rogerio Boccato), surrounds her with intensity and personality, a testament to Kristen's vision and the creativity it inspires.

This critically acclaimed vocal group has refined their musical story to a high art. They are known for their close-knit voicings, inspired arrangements and unparalleled vocal blend. Their chameleon-like musicianship allows them to move seamlessly from setting to setting, be it orchestral/big band to the intimate trio lineup. With deep interests rooted in jazz, Brazilian, R & B, classical, and pop, their music mixes traditional sensibilities with more than a dash of the unexpected. Formed by Darmon Meader, Peter Eldridge, Kim Nazarian, Caprice Fox, and Sara Krieger, New York Voices had their first performances in 1988.

Laura Osnes at the Birdland Theater

"Repertoire Roulette" will be very special concerts in which the audience will literally draw song titles from a hat for Laura to perform on the spot! Perhaps the audience will hear snippets from Laura's beloved Broadway performances as Cinderella, Bonnie Parker, or Nellie Forbush! Or maybe, she will take the audience on a journey through her audition book...or hear songs from her dream roles! Solivan has made a name for herself as a hard swinging, passionate, vocalist who has a commanding stage presence and is able to captivate audiences with her joyous exuberance and whit. Solivan's idea was to create a band that incorporated many of the elements in her quartet including high energy, swing and a unique repertoire. In addition, she wanted to work with some of the jazz communities' best arrangers to work on expanding her repertoire, which includes several her own originals as well as standards, with original arrangements of material that was created for this group. So far, the result has been a highly energized & swinging band that will take you from the traditional feel through to salsa and the modern jazz idiom. All anchored by Solivan's strong surefooted voice and confident leadership withJosh Richman (Piano), Matthew Parrish (Bass) and Montez Coleman (Drums).

Singer and bandleader Eddie Bruce, whose singular celebrations of Tony Bennett, The Best of Broadway, and Frank Sinatra has played to sold out houses from Feinstein's to Atlantic City, stars in an electrifying, mesmerizing and unforgettable tribute to Anthony Newley, one of most distinctive and incomparable talents in show business. Renee Manning/Earl McIntyre Septet at the Birdland Theater

Renee has worked with the Mel Lewis Orchestra, the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band, Chico O'Farrill, Lester Bowie, Mingus Big Bands and many others touring Europe, Scandinavia & Asia. She has also had the honor of sharing the stage with legends Carmen McCrae, Dizzy Gillespie, Taj Mahal and David Amram. Manning is a strong composer as well and has received several writing grants. Her compositions include "Nee's Corner" a collection of compositions dedicated to all aspects of femininity. Earl has played, recorded or arranged for Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, the Ellington Orchestra, Cecil Taylor, Arturo O'Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, and more. was the producer, originator and driving force behind the First Annual Brooklyn Brass Fest, The festival presented performances, workshops and panels featuring some of the most notable brass instrument artists in the world.

Singer/pianist Eric Comstock has been called "a song's best friend," and the jazz and pop songbooks are in great hands when he is onstage at Birdland. Joining Eric will be eminent bassist/composer Sean Smith -- in all, a perfect winter Saturday supper!

The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill -- leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz" (NY Times) -- was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte.

Jim Caruso's Cast Party is a wildly popular weekly soiree that brings a sprinkling of Broadway glitz and urbane wit to the legendary Birdland in New York City every Monday night. It's a cool cabaret night-out enlivened by a hilariously impromptu variety show. Showbiz superstars, backed by Steve Doyle on bass, Billy Stritch on piano and Daniel Glass on drums, hit the stage alongside up-and-comers, serving up jaw-dropping music and general razzle-dazzle.
