Galerie Lelong to Showcase New York, Paris Artists at EXPO Chicago, 9/19-22

Galerie Lelong will be participating in Expo Chicago, the second year of the international exposition of contemporary and modern art from September 19-22, 2013, at Navy Pier, Chicago, IL (Booth 513).

On view will be a selection of artworks from Galerie Lelong's New York and Paris galleries by artists Sarah Cain, Petah Coyne, Günther Förg, Leon Golub, Alfredo Jaar, Lin Tianmiao, Nalini Malani, Jaume Plensa, Zilia Sánchez, Kate Shepherd, Kiki Smith, Ettore Spalletti, and Barthélémy Toguo.

Highlights from our booth include:

Sarah Cain is known for her use of several different medias in her work. Always experimenting, the artist's environment dictates many of these materials. One of the works on view features a combination of beads, thread, silver leaf, gold leaf, acrylic, and gouache on canvas which all come together to create geometric shapes that push the medium of painting with layered dimensions. Cain was born in in 1979 and works in Los Angeles. Galerie Lelong will mount her first solo show with the gallery in winter 2014.

Petah Coyne's Untitled #1385 (Midnight News), the artist's newest, richly-surfaced, hand-built sculptural installation, is a labor-intensive work that reflects the weight of socio-political issues. The disparate elements - velvet chandelier, hand-coated flowers and chain - amplify the presence of human touch, and infer a need for human connection. Coyne's work is in numerous permanent museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; SFMoMA, San Francisco; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City; Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati; among others.

Large, abstract paintings by German artist Günther Förg will be displayed. Frequently compared to the Abstract Masters of the 1950s and 1960s, Förg's works also play with Minimalism with their basic simplicity which has extended into painting, sculpture, and photography. His work has been shown at major museums including the Stedelijk Museum, Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and Kunsthaus Bregenz.

Alfredo Jaar's Three Women (Graça Machel) will be on view. In this work Jaar uses the physical illumination of the small portrait of Graça Machel to challenge the viewer to contemplate the under-recognition of Machel despite her significant contributions as a humanitarian and activist. 2013 marks a special moment in Alfedo Jaar's career. Jaar represents Chile at the 2013 Venice Biennale with his immersive site specific installation, Venezia, Venezia currently on view until November 24th. Alfredo Jaar's work is also on view at Les Rencontres d'Arles, a world-renowned summer photography festival in Arles, France.

Paintings by Indian artist Nalini Malani present diverse images and create multilayered narratives which often focus on creating dynamic visual stories that reference gender and identity issues. One of the works on view features Alice, from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.Lifting inspiration from female figures from both Indian and Western descent is a common theme in the artist's work. Malani, a pioneer of video art and new media, just mounted Nalini Malani: In Search of Vanished Blood at Galerie Lelong, New York. The artist's exhibitionBeyond Print - Memory, Transference, Montage at Le Centre de la Gravure et de l'Image imprimée in La Louvière, Belgium opens this fall.

A bronze sculpture that bears the deliberately generalized appearance seen throughout Jaume Plensa's work will be on view. Marianna's eyes are closed, in a contemplative or dream state. Plensa continues to match classical sculptural aesthetics while also bringing us his innovative contemporary practice. Chicago is a special location for Jaume Plensa - his interactive Crown Fountain in Millennium Park is a celebrated work in Chicago's public art collection. In 2014 some of the artist's recent works will come to Chicago to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Millennium Park.

Galerie Lelong proudly announced the representation of Zilia Sánchezearlier this year. On view in our booth will be a small shaped canvas. Continually expanding the boundaries of Minimalism, Sánchez escapes any simple categorization of her own in bringing together the feminine and the erotic, the painterly and the sculptural. Zilia Sánchez was born in Cuba in 1926, and lived and worked in New York from 1964-1972 before permanently residing in Puerto Rico.

In her unique approach to painting, Kate Shepherd applies threadlike lines of oil paint upon highly saturated layers of enamel. The delicate and intimately familiar forms are juxtaposed against the glossy, durable enamel. Furthermore, joined wood panels, rather than canvas, are the base of Shepherd's paintings, creating a structure out of the painting itself. Shepherd's works are found in numerous public collections, including The Phillips Collection, Washington DC; Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, IN; Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, MI; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Boston, MA; Des Moines Art Center, Des Moines, IA; and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Scottsdale, AZ.
