Dottie Herman, the most successful woman in real estate, is the quintessential American success story. As the current CEO of Douglas Elliman, she exemplifies the distinguishable qualities of a great leader, mentor, and role model. Dottie began her real estate career in 1978 working as the Northeast Regional Manager for Merrill Lynch on Long Island. In 1989, Merrill Lynch sold their real estate division to Prudential, where Dottie stayed on running the Long Island Division. Dottie was convinced she could run the company herself, so in 1990 she borrowed $9 million dollars, plus $2.3 million in working capital from Prudential to purchase Prudential Long Island Realty. She quickly turned the company into the powerhouse brokerage firm on Long Island and then in the Hamptons. By 2001, Herman and her business partner Howard Lorber wanted to conquer Manhattan and purchased Douglas Elliman, the city's largest and most prestigious brokerage firm. Since then, Douglas Elliman has become the third largest residential real estate company in the country and the largest and fastest-growing real estate residential brokerage in New York City, with over 7,000 real estate professionals and 675 employees working in more than 113 offices. Moreover, Douglas Elliman has a strategic global alliance with London-based Knight Frank Residential for business in the worldwide luxury markets spanning 60 countries and 6 continents.?
