Fountain Gallery Presents RE-CREATION: Artists Respond to Master and Modern Works

By:

Fountain Gallery, located at 702 Ninth Avenue and representing artists with mental illness, today announced the upcoming opening of Re-Creation: Artists Respond to Master and Modern Works. For this exhibition, Fountain Gallery artists have created their own interpretations of artworks by world-renowned artists of various eras. The show will be on view from March 25 through May 4, 2011, with an Opening Reception on March 25, from 6 to 8 p.m.

"Many artists over time have paid homage to other artists by using well-known pieces as a starting point for new work," said Jason Bowman, Director of Fountain Gallery. "It's not a matter of ‘copying' famous art pieces; artists take off from these original works as jazz musicians riff on standard songs," continued Bowman. "Re-Creation offers an opportunity to view new works by Fountain Gallery artists while approaching classic works with a fresh eye," concluded Bowman.

Re-Creation spotlights works inspired by artists including Chagall, Lichtenstein, Rockwell, Rousseau and Velázquez. Among the art mediums represented are acrylic, oil, watercolor, pen and ink and digital photography.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and by generous support from The Jarvis
and Constance Doctorow Family Foundation and The Renate, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust.
