Artist-in-Residence Dawn Roe.

Broward Cultural Division's Public Art & Design Program will host a temporary community artist's studio in the baggage claim area of Terminal 1, at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Artist-in-Residence Dawn Roe has been commissioned through the Public Art & Design Program to document the historic construction of the south runway and the Terminal 4 expansion through a series of artworks and installations. Roe will be engaging with the public, sharing her personal impressions on the construction project and encouraging travelers to view how she transfers her vision into works of art.

This studio will be the first in a series of three temporary community studio events -- the next two will be held in May and September 2014; and will offer the public an opportunity to see first-hand, the development of the public art project. Travelers will get an exclusive sneak peak at how the artist will represent the gradual and dramatic changes to the surrounding areas in a final suite of artworks.

Roe uses the camera to investigate issues of temporality, memory and history with a focus on optical experience. She is interested in spaces that shift or change either through environmental or seasonal occurrences, or manmade transformation. For Roe, the opportunity to respond to the runway construction and terminal expansion in relation to the surrounding landscape and its varied history provides a vast area of artistic investigation. The rich histories within Broward County coupled with the symbolic removal and redistribution of the land throughout the construction process are perfectly suited to the nature of her work.
