Farmington Players Hosts Auditions For THE PRODUCERS 1/9/11

The Farmington Players are holding auditions for "The Producers," the blockbuster Mel Brooks' musical that blew away audiences on Broadway.

AUDITION DATE

SUNDAY JANUARY 9, 2011 at The Farmington Players Barn, 32332 W. 12 Mile Road, Farmington Hills, MI 48334. Registration begins at 11:30 am. Auditions begin at noon.

SHOW DATES

April 29,30, May 1, 6,7,8,12,13,14,15,19,20,21

MANDATORY REHEARSAL DATES

Tech: Sunday April 17, Tech: Saturday April 23,

Also: April 25, 26, 27 (dress rehearsal)
REHEARSAL SCHEDULE

Costume fittings & limited music & choreography rehearsals will

begin in February. Rehearsals will begin 3 times per week in March until the show opens.

Expect some Friday or weekend rehearsal to accommodate business & travel conflicts.

The final schedule will be planned after casting.

AUDITION DETAILS

All those auditioning for leads be prepared to sing the solos suggested in the

character descriptions. A karaoke version of the show will be used for everyone instead

a live pianist. No Happy Birthday. Singing a capella or singing along with your own tape

is acceptable. If you are trying out for chorus you will only be asked to sing a few bars of

"Goodbye" or "Along Came Bialy" (ladies) by yourself. Please wear comfortable clothes that

you can move in. Please bring dance & tap shoes if you own them.

First cast read thru: Possible dates: Jan 11 or 12. Be prepared to commit to the best

date on your audition form.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Max Bialystock: 250 speeches & 12 songs. (Mid 40's - 60's) A sleazy washed up Broadway producer seducing little old ladies for their money. A loveable rogue who is desperate to return to his former Glory Days. Must have great comedic timing.

Range: Baritone, low Bb-highEb.

Song: King of Broadway, Betrayed (be prepared to sing both)

Leo Bloom: 175 speeches & 12 songs. (Mid 20's -late 30's) A timid unassuming, naïve, neurotic accountant yearning to become a Broadway producer and live life to the fullest! Must have great comedic timing and the ability to sincerely take it all in and react. Tap dancing a plus!

Range: Tenor/Baritone, low A- highF

Song: I Want To Be a Producer

Ulla: 50 speeches & 5 songs (20's - early 30's) The voluptuous Swedish actress ready to be an overnight star! A triple threat.... must be able to stop the show belting and dancing her solo and deliver comedic lines with a Swedish accent. The ideal candidate would be taller than Leo.

Range: Mezzo/Alto, lowBb-high Eb, great belter

Song: When You've Got It
Roger De Bris-: 55 speeches & 7 songs. (50's - 60's) The flamboyant gay director desperate for the true recognition of his theatrical talent. The ideal candidate would be tall & statuesque for the evening gown scene & have the comedic schmaltz necessary to play Hitler (German accent for Hitler)

Range: Baritone, low G-high G

Song: Keep It Gay

Carmen Ghia: 50 speeches & 6 songs. (30's - late 40"s) Roger's significant other. The ideal candidate would be shorter than Roger and have the moves of a cat and the soul of Norma Desmond.

Range: Tenor/Baritone, low C-high F, good falsetto

Song: Keep It Gay

Franz Liebkind: 50 speeches & 7 songs ( 40's ) The Nazi author of Springtime for Hitler who has never left WWII behind. A good German accent & the ability to play big comedy seriously are necessary.

Range: Baritone/Tenor, low A - highG

Song: In Old Bavaria
Ensemble: lots of extra lines & 8 songs with chorus support. At least 9 men & 9 women of all ages to play a multitude of roles such as Roger's entourage, Mr. Marks, judge, little old ladies, show girls, first nighters, male accountants, male & female prisoners, storm troopers etc. Most chorus people will be in at least 5-6 numbers.

These chorus parts are fun with plenty of stage time and lots of variety!

About The Barn

You can find The Farmington players at farmingtonplayers.org and also on Facebook. The group began as an off-shoot of the American Association of University Women. Their first production, The Torchbearers, was performed at a local church. Later in the 1950s, after performing in various city and educational locations, The Farmington Players moved into an old dairy barn located on the site of their present facility on West Twelve Mile Road.

Initially, productions were staged downstairs on a dirt floor. Over the years, improvements to the original Barn transformed it into a more finished space, with the theater itself eventually moving upstairs into a traditional and finished setting.

Since 1953, The Farmington Players have staged more than 180 different musicals, dramas, mysteries and comedies, all as a community theater with 100% volunteer membership.
People from Farmington, Farmington Hills and beyond have come to recognize the group as a true community resource. Since the completion of its all-new, state of the art facility in 2003, The Farmington Players Barn Theater has expanded its mission, serving as the site for city-sponsored events such as youth theater camps in the summer, concerts with groups as varied as Blackthorn and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and as a meeting place for various groups.

The Farmington Players have been saving money over the years to enhance the onstage experience at The Barn. In November, 2009 they installed a new rigging system in the vast fly space. Show Directors are thrilled to finally have the ability to fly in flats and use drops to set scenes in a matter of seconds.
