"Playing God and a Half" by Sasha Sloan

Play God! God? Not a problem, I can do that! Playing God/She alongside a God/He always seemed like a super fun idea. I get to rule the world and have a gorgeous counterpart (played by Adam Kantor). Sounds like a deal to me!

God has so many different meanings and personalities to everyone, so playing God in the traditional creation story shouldn't be that tough, right? Then I read the script and asked a couple questions: “Well, does God have an arc?” “How and why do I want Adam to eat the apple (even though I clearly don't want him to disobey me after I blatantly told him not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil?” Uh, oh! Looks like playing God wasn't going to be as easy as I thought! That was right when things got juicy!

After having a couple rehearsals and chat sessions with Larry Raben, our director, and Joe DiPietro, our book writer, I began to grasp this idea of creating life to make a choice.  Another thought to consider was that there is no greater love than free love. Taking these ideas and being able to draw intentions and motivations for the scene work and songs helped me significantly! Ahhh, finally playing God made sense! (Well, a little.)

Adam K. and I were able to embody similar gestures, postures and inflections to denote that we are the same character, just different sides of that character. Having the audience accept this idea from the start without questioning ("Uh, and that guy?” … which is actually a line Adam used to say during our first scene, but has since been cut from the show.) We’re never onstage at the same time, except for one scene at a very poignant time in Adam's (played by Jose Llana) story.

During the show, though, God/He and I tend to check in with each other backstage. I like to keep an eye on my other half! It continues to be spry and very pleasurable each night playing The Creator. I'd do it again!
