Exclusive: ZORRO Musical in the Works with Music by The Gipsy Kings

BWW has learned that work is under way for a new musical adaption of ZORRO, which features music by The Gipsy Kings and lyrics by Stephen Clark, with a book by Stephen Clark & Helen Edmundson with additional book material by Paul Down Calaizzo. A New York City reading will take place on November 15, with rehearsals beginning November 1. The reading will feature direction by Christopher Renshaw.

ZORRO takes place in the early 19th Century in a Latin pueblo in California, and also in Spain. The score is a mixture of Latin, flamenco, and Gypsy music. While the show is a great swashbuckling adventure story, it also deals with the complex relationship between two brothers, as well as their culture.

With book and lyrics by Stephen Clark and original music by The Gipsy Kings, ZORRO opened on the West End in 2008, where it garnered multiple Olivier nominations. Since its West End closing, productions have been mounted in France, Russia, Japan and Holland. The new reading is being produced by Stage Entertainment.
