Eustis Receives Honor at the Elliot Norton Awards in Boston

Oskar Eustis, the artistic director who recently moved from the Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, R.I. to become to current head of New York's Public Theatre, was honored on Monday night with the 23rd annual Elliot Norton Award for sustained excellence in theater.

Boston's most prestigious award ceremony, the Eliot Nortons are
presented by the Boston Theater Critics Association and are named after the drama critic who passed away in 2003.

Unable to attend, Elaine Stritch gave her acceptance speech for her Lifetime Achievement Award via videotape.

The American Repertory Theater of Cambridge, Mass., and Boston's Huntington Theater Company garnered the most awards. ART received awards for Production by a Large Resident Company (The Miser), Solo Performance (Pamela Gien in The Syringa Tree), Actor in a Large Company (John Kelly, Dido, Queen of Carthage) and Production by a Visiting Company (The Far Side of the Moon, Quebec's Ex Machina). The Huntington won for New Script (Melinda Lopez' Sonia Flew), Actress in a Large Company (Phylicia Rashad, Gem of the Ocean) and Set Design in a Large Company (Adam Stockhausen, for both Sonia Flew and 36 Views).

The Director of a Large Company award went to Keith Gash for his Topdog/Underdog, a co-production with Trinity and New Repertory Theater. The Sanctuary Lamp by the Sugan Theater Company and Blue/Orange by the Zeitgeist Stage Company respectively won Production by a Small Resident Company and Local Fringe Company Production. The City Stage Company and Shear Madness, which is in its 25th year, were given special awards.
