Dreamgirls dances onto more movie theater screens nationwide today.
On Friday, January 12th, eleven days before Oscar nominations are announced, the Bill Condon adaptation of the 1981 classic musical - which has so far been seen in a fairly extensive limited release - goes into nationwide release in 1,900 theaters, according to USA Today.
"What it needs to do is maintain its momentum," he says. "It's already done solid business, so it's a serious Oscar contender. If it did $8.8 million last weekend, and if you get past $10 million this weekend, that would be very good," said Brandon Gray of BoxOfficeMojo.com.
As of January 10th, Dreamgirls' domestic total was at $56,200,367, per Box Office Mojo. On Christmas Day, when it opened, Dreamgirls took in an impressive $8.7 million. According to the article, the producers of Dreamgirls are adapting the strategy that took Chicago (with screenplay by Condon) to Oscar gold - opening in limited release and expanding into more theatres as the film gains critical and commercial success.
Dreamgirls, with a score by Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen and an adapted screenplay by director Condon, stars Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce Knowles, Anika Noni Rose, Eddie Murphy and Jamie Foxx. Produced by Dreamworks, it is currently nominated for 5 Golden Globe Awards, including Best Comedy/Musical.
