Geraint Wyn Davies - the Welsh-born actor who won the Helen Hayes Best Actor Award for his acclaimed performance as Cyrano at the Shakespeare Theatre Company - will return to the boards in the title role of Richard III in the Shakespeare Theatre Company's production, starting performances at company's Lansburgh Theatre (450 7th Street NW) from January 16 through March 18, 2007.  The official press opening is Sunday, January 21 at 7:30pm.

Directed by Michael Kahn, Shakespeare Theatre Company's artistic director, Richard III features Pamela Payton-Wright (Long Day's Journey Into Night, The Night of the Iguana) in the role of Richard's mother the Duchess of York.  Also featured in the 28-member cast are Ralph Cosham, Margor Dionne, Edward Gero, Tana Hicken, Floyd King, Claire Lautier, and Andrew Long.

"Richard III is the third production of the Shakespeare Theatre Company's '06-'07 season, and is the company's first production as part of the landmark Shakespeare in Washington festival, the first-ever citywide, 6-month celebration of the Bard in Washington, DC, which has been curated by Mr. Kahn.  From now through June '07, over 60 national and international performing arts organizations -- theatre, opera and dance, along with film, art and museum exhibitions -- will pay tribute to The Bard with works by or inspired by Shakespeare," according to production notes.

"Treachery, manipulation, murder — are at the heart of Richard III, Shakespeare's tragedy about the power-hungry Richard, Duke of Gloucester will stop at nothing in his quest to secure the throne. The House of York's 'bad seed' seduces and slaughters his enemies, his kinsmen and even his own wife in a legendary reign of terror and villainy."

The production is designed by Lee Savage (sets), Jennifer Moeller (costumes) and Charlie Morrison (lights), Martin Desjardins (composer/sound designer).

Performances are Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7:30 pm; Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm; Sundays at 7:30 pm; matinees on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm.
