This autumn, the award-winning theatre company Jordan & Skinner premiere a brand new show about the original and uncredited inventor of the board game, Monopoly. DO NOT PASS GO premieres at Platform, Glasgow on 2nd October before touring theatres across Scotland.

DO NOT PASS GO tells the unheralded story of pioneering feminist, economist, disrupter, and games designer Lizzie Magie, who invented ‘The Landlord's Game' - the board game that was to become Monopoly. Lizzie's design had two sets of rules and was intended to challenge the evils of land monopoly and allow players to experience the opportunities of wealth distribution, but her game was stolen by another gamemaker Charles Darrow and repurposed to become the notorious Christmas Day wrecker we all know today -  making Darrow the first millionaire games designer in history.

Now, almost a hundred years later, acclaimed theatremakers Mel Jordan and Caitlin Skinner (AKA Jordan & Skinner) bring their unique and irreverent style of physical theatre and comedy to unearth Magie's story, seeking justice for her and for all who find the economic game rigged against them. Through a combination of clown, physical theatre, dance, British Sign Language and spoken English, DO NOT PASS GO uses Magie's story as a launching pad to investigate why women continue to be disadvantaged by the economic system and why we still struggle to imagine economic alternatives to the status quo.

DO NOT PASS GO will be Jordan & Skinner's first show which is completely accessible to deaf audiences, featuring integrated BSL performed by a member of the cast. Performer and deviser Melanie Jordan and director Caitlin Skinner will work closely with movement director Emma Jayne Park and a BSL Consultant, Duffy to create a highly visual, physical and textured piece that brings Magie's story to life.

Caitlin Skinner and Melanie Jordan commented: “We have become obsessed with the story of Lizzie Magie and can't wait to share it with audiences around the country. It's outrageous, inspiring and galvanising. It has chimed with lots of questions we find ourselves asking today about women and the economy, about winners and losers, and how ideas are heard and shared. We wanted to understand more about why Lizzie and her game were lost to history and why Charles and his have endured and are well celebrated. We are particularly excited to create a show with integrated British Sign Language. Working with two languages has opened up really exciting possibilities for visual and physical comedy and storytelling. Do Not Pass Go is more than just one woman's experience of inventing a board game, it's about how we all feel about money, ownership and the potential for change.”

Alongside the tour, Jordan & Skinner will host a range of workshops, street theatre performances, and post-show panel discussions to further explore the themes and ideas explored in the show with audiences around Scotland.
