Cynthia Erivo to Sing Mary Magdalene on All-Female JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR Album
Morgan James, Torya Beard, and Richard Amelius have partnered with PledgeMusic to for an exciting new concept album featuring the only all-female cast of Jesus Christ Superstar. Superstar Cynthia Erivo has just been announced as the project's Mary Magdalene.
On January 16, 2017, a powerful group of women came together at New York City's Highline Ballroom to lend their voices to a sold-out production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar. The stunning show left the audience abuzz with enough excitement to lead to a studio album.Recording is set to begin in the spring with many of the original cast members returning to reprise their roles. Broadway alum Shoshana Bean will give voice once more to Judas Iscariot alongside Morgan James in her role as Jesus Christ. Orfeh, Ann Harada, and Debbie Gravitte have also signed on for the star-studded studio recording, along with Ellyn Marie Marsh, Jasmin Walker, Bryonha Marie Parham, Isabel Santiago, Tamika Sonja Lawrence, Edin Espinosa, and Pearl Sun. Through the pre-order campaign on PledgeMusic, fans who missed the original performance - as well as those who wish to experience it all over again - can enjoy an immersive behind-the-scenes experience. A $15 donation secures a digital download of the double studio album, as well as exclusive behind-the-scenes content and updates. Erivo made her Broadway debut reprising her starring role as 'Celie' in the critically acclaimed revival of The Color Purple. She first played the role in 2013 at London's Menier Chocolate Factory, earning rave reviews. She also earned a Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, as well as the Drama Desk Award, Theatre World and Outer Critics Circle Awards, a Grammy win and a Drama League Award nomination. A UK native, Erivo graduated from the famed Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).
