Cornelia Street Cafe/Underground to Host Special Program in Observance of Yom HaShoah
On Thursday, April 12 at 6:00 pm, at the Cornelia Street Café/Underground performance space, a group of writers, musicians, actors, and filmmakers, convened by poet/film producer Janet R. Kirchheimer will gather in observance of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, a day that "commemorates the lives and heroism of Jewish people who died in the Holocaust."
Those taking part in this special program include:
Janet R. Kirchheimer, author of How to Spot One of Us, (2007), and producer of the cinematic documentary exploring poetry written about the Holocaust titled, AFTER. The documentary, directed by two-time Emmy Award winner, Richard Kroehling, features the works of renowned, contemporary poets responding to the Holocaust and its aftermath. It also presents interviews about poetry and the role it plays in an increasingly divided and violent world that continues to grapple with genocide.
Janet's works as a poet and essayist, have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, as well as online publications. She is a Pushcart Prize nominee and received a Drisha Institute for Jewish Education Arts Fellowship. Janet teaches a variety of creative writing workshops and Jewish-themed classes and is a gold-star, licensed New York City sightseeing guide.
Robin Hirsch, a former Oxford, Fulbright and English-Speaking Union Scholar and the author of the acclaimed memoir, Last Dance at the Hotel Kempinski, for portions of which he received two NYFA (New York Foundation for the Arts), Fellowships. It has been called "one of the best books ever written on the long arm of the Holocaust" (Jewish Book News), "a luminous evocation of a vanished European world, masterfully performed" (American Theatre Magazine), and "completely glorious" (The Village Voice).
He is an award-winning scholar, writer, and actor, but the titles he is proudest of are self-bestowed: Minister of Culture, Wine Czar, Dean of Faculty at the Cornelia Street Café, where he has presided over some 700 cultural events a year since 1977.
The program will also include musical performances by Liz Magnes, one of Israel's most dynamic and creative solo jazz pianists, and Raquel Solomon, poet and guitarist. As well, actor Jackie Margolis will read from the poems of Gertrud Kolmar, a German lyric poet, and writer who died in Auschwitz. Additionally, there will be a screening of excerpts from the documentary feature, AFTER.
