"Saxophonist Tony Malaby, is one of the most compelling living voices on his instrument who is able to musically expand in multiple musical directions. Whether it is in a modern harmonic linear approach or a sonic approach. His is not an eclectic style, but an authentic language in which he is able to create meaning and communicate feeling through the primal power of sound and rhythm."
- Mark Dresser (July 2008)

Additional Events at Cornelia Cafe include:
Sunday, May 16 at 8:30PM JAMES WEIDMAN THREE WORLDS QUINTET
(James Weidman, piano; Francisco Mela, drums; Brad Jones, bass; Marty Erlich, alto saxophone, clarinet; Barry Cooper, trombone)

A valued and talented pianist, James Weidman has been a sideman and accompanist in many settings over the past 20 years; from Abbey Lincoln and Steve Coleman to Kevin Mahogany and Joe Lovano. He has also proven to be an increasingly significant bandleader and composer. His most recent CD, Three Worlds, is unquestionably his most ambitious recording to date, and his debut for Inner Circle Music, a label founded by critically acclaimed saxophonist Greg Osby to showcase musicians Osby feels are deserving of greater recognition. Weidman played in Osby's band during the 1990s. This performance at Cornelia Street Café includes many of the performers on the record and also Barry Cooper on trombone.
On Three Worlds, Weidman performs nine of his originals plus the traditional "Joshua Fit The Battle Of Jericho" with his trio including Francisco Mela on drums and Brad Jones on bass. On other tracks, Weidman is found in varying configurations of quartet on two selections (with the addition of vibraphonist Jay Hoggard) and a particularly adventurous quintet on five selections (with trombonist Ray Anderson and multi-reedist Marty Ehrlich; sans Hoggard).
