People Magazine talked to Corey Feldman, who starred in the 1985 film version of Goonies about the prospects of it coming to stage. Feldman told the mag "They are talking about doing a Broadway musical, and I know [director] Richard Donner is really behind that," he says. "If they did it, I would be open to doing something. I mean, I don't think I could play Mouth at this point in the game - I'm a little old to be playing a kid ... If they offered it, I would definitely be open to it."

As BroadwayWorld has previously reported, at the Saturn Awards, Collider.com spoke with Richard Donner and Lauren Shuler Donner. Among the topics discussed were musical adaptations of "The Goonies" and "Dave."

Richard Donner broke the news by saying, "We're going to Broadway with it to make a musical. Yes it's true. True. We're far along the line now, getting the proper people to do it."

He added, "You gotta get a great book write you gotta get a great Broadway director you gotta get musical people. It's involved, but she's [wife Lauren] a genius at it, unbelievable. And she's doing "Dave" as a musical on Broadway. So she's really helped me with this thing tremendously- she's the lead on everything. It's another world, it's years. You finally get it together, then you take it on the road, then you make your changes and everything. The only this is this story is so solid, so good that you don't want to destroy it. And there's millions of spots that scream out for music."

When asked when he hopes the project will be completed he answered, "Before I die," before saying, "It'll probably be 2 years."

Today, WENN News reports that the project is one step closer to coming to fruition.  Donner tells Empire: "It's been taking forever, but that long process just got a lot shorter. There's a great writer/producer called Tim Long who does musicals on The Simpsons which are classic. He just delivered a treatment of The Goonies as a musical, and it's friggin' great!"
