Conductor Semyon Bychkov to Lead NY Philharmoic in Mahler's Symphony No. 6

Esteemed conductor Semyon Bychkov returns to the New York Philharmonic to conduct one of his signature works, Mahler's Symphony No. 6, on Thursday, February 11 at 7:30 PM, Friday, February 12 at 8:00 PM, Saturday, February 13 at 8:00 PM, and Tuesday, February 16 at 8:00 PM at David Geffen Hall.

Mr. Bychkov has conducted Mahler's Symphony No. 6 worldwide, including most recently with the Munich Philharmonic in October 2015 and the Orquesta Nacionales de España in May 2015, as well as with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the BBC Proms and the Vienna Philharmonic during its 2011 U.S. tour. His interpretation of Mahler's "Tragic" Symphony has been praised for its dynamism, and for intertwining thrill with sensitivity. Following his performance with the BBC Symphony, The Sunday Telegraph wrote, "Bychkov showed here exactly why he has become one of the world's leading conductors, with an elegant style that mixes calm authority and persuasive heart. In Mahler's Sixth Symphony that translated into a cataclysmic performance...Bychkov struck a perfect balance between tension and release, shaping everything with subtle restraint..."

Semyon Bychkov, who made his New York Philharmonic debut in 1984, last appeared with the orchestra in October 2015 leading works by Brahms and Detlev Glanert. He returns to New York just after completing a run of critically acclaimed performances of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin at Covent Garden. Further highlights of his 2015-16 season include performances with the Berlin Philharmonic (to be streamed live on the Digital Concert Hall) and Czech Philharmonic. He conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra on a seven-city European tour, returns to the Vienna Philharmonic for a second tour, conducts subscription concerts at the Musikverein during which he will lead the world premiere of a new concerto by Thomas Larcher, and leads the annual televised outdoor concert at the gardens of Austria's Imperial Schönbrunn Palace.

Mr. Bychkov is currently Gunter Wand Conducting Chair of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Otto Klemperer Chair of Conducting at London's Royal Academy of Music. Trained in Russia as well as in the U.S., he is equally at home in the concert hall and opera house, having served as music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic, Grand Rapids Symphony, and Orchestre de Paris, and chief conductor of both the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne and the Dresden Semperoper. He regularly returns to orchestras and opera companies from the Berlin Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony and Gewandhaus Orchestra to the Vienna Staastoper and Royal Opera. Mr. Bychkov has recorded extensively and his discography includes an album featuring Mahler's Symphony No. 3 with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne for Avie records, for which Classic FM Magazine wrote, "...Semyon Bychkov's approach to Mahler's massive score is controlled, purposeful, and excellently free of eccentricity."
