Chris Bakriges Performs at Miles Café 3/20, 3/27

Reflections on Henri Matisse's Jazz Chris Bakriges-piano, David Bakriges-violin, Rich Mollin-bass, Gary Smith-drums

In 1930 the artist Henri Matisse visited New York on his way to the South Seas. It was his trip to The Big Apple not Tahiti that inspired Modernism's great colorist to publish Jazz, a book of colored paper cutouts.

Matisse viewed jazz as a "chromatic and rhythmic improvisation." The title Jazz evoked for Matisse the idea of a structure of rhythm and repetition broken by the unexpected action of improvisations. He wrote, "There are wonderful things in real jazz, the talent for improvisation, the liveliness, the being at one with the audience."

Both the text and the cut outs inspired pianist and composer Christopher Bakriges and his son, violinist David Bakriges, to make what they refer to as musical reflections on Matisse's work. Father and son is joined by bassist Rich Mollin and drumer Gary Smith.
