Michael Cerveris, who doubles as a Broadway star and a rocker, will open for the Scottish band Teenage Fanclub at the Bowery Ballroom (6 Delancey St.) on Saturday, July 23rd.

Cerveris' opening act for the Glasgow band comes as a late announcement. However, it should come as no surprise that he has signed on. Norman Blake, one of the band's members, previously appeared on Cerveris' debut album, Dog Eared; they collaborated on the recording's first track, "Crosshill." The two also recorded another album (not yet released) at the Fanclub's Disco Citizen studio in Glasgow.

Teenage Fanclub plays "sunny, jangly, melodic pop music in the tradition of the Byrds, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and Big Star," states Cerveris. The band is a favorite of author Nick Hornby (High Fidelity), and the late Kurt Cobaine of Nirvana also counted himself a fan of the group, who have been together for over 10 years. Teenage Fan Club has released such albums as Howdy and their latest, Man-Made.

Cerveris' band is entitled after the star's surname; Dog-Eared was released last year to strong reviews. It was also recently announced that the Sondheim stalwart will take on the title role in the upcoming Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd. Cerveris starred in the Ravinia productions of Sunday in the Park with George and Passion (repeating the role of Giorgio at Lincoln Center, which he also played in the acclaimed Kennedy Center production in 2002). He will appear with frequent Ravinia co-stars Patti LuPone and Audra McDonald in the upcoming Ravinia mounting of Anyone Can Whistle in August. Cerveris was a 2004 Tony winner for his performance as John Wilkes Booth in the Roundabout Theatre production of Assassins. Other credits include Wintertime, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Titanic and The Who's Tommy.

The concert, at which doors will open at 8:30-9 PM, is expected to sell-out relatively soon, so those interested in purchasing tickets should act fast. For tickets, visit www.ticketweb.com, or the Mercury Lounge (without a service charge) at www.mercuryloungenyc.com.
