In order for the arts to thrive within a country, it's not only important to support artists nationally, but to have an open exchange with other countries and cultures.

So, as reported in The Stage, last week's vote favoring the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union has Britain's artistic community considering extensive negative impacts.

Aside from access to certain funding, such as the €1.3 billion Creative Europe program, there are issues that could arise limiting international travel of touring performing companies and exhibits.

Actor Samuel West, who heads the National Campaign for the Arts, has called on culture secretary John Whittingdale to prevent further damage the U.K.'s artistic community.

"There are a host of other issues that we must address over the coming months," says West. "International artistic exchange, export of cultural products, copyright, visas and access to training in European centers of excellence, to name just some."

Social media reactions below are from actress Jenna Russell, journalist Libby Purves, Derby Theatre Artistic Director Sarah Brigham, Almeida Theatre Artistic Director Rupert Goold, THISISPOPBABY Theatre Company, choreographer Philip Joel, National Youth Theatre Artistic Director Paul Roseby and Camden People's Theatre Executive Director Amber Massie-Blomfie.
