Gary Burton will bring his brand New Group to the Blue Note, The New Gary Burton Quartet, featuring guitarist Julian Lage, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Antonio Sanchez. These performances mark Burton's first at the Blue Note in over five years, and the group's North American debut.

In a career that has spanned five decades, Burton has played with some of jazz's biggest names and is widely considered a pioneer as both a vibraphonist and composer. "These are all musicians I have played with in the past, though never in this combination," Burton says. "Julian is a constant inspiration, and we have played enough now to have a very deep rapport once we are on stage and we get into the songs. And it just doesn't get any better than having Scott and Antonio for your rhythm section. We all have carved out some time to put this New Group together, and I am very much looking forward to playing with everyone." Burton plans to record the New Quartet on Concord and tour in 2011.

Opening acts will play throughout the week as a part of the Blue Note's Emerging Artist Series presented by Brother Thelonious of North Coast Brewing Co.: Julian Pollack 5 ft. Nir Felder (10/20), Nick Biello/Manuel Weyand Fourthought Quartet (10/21), & Melissa Aldana CD-Release (10/24).

BIO:  Gary Burton's Quartets of the early Sixties and Seventies defied genres to be hung on them. Burton created bands featuring incredible musicianship while discovering more than a few youngsters along the way who later became legends. With a swirl of incredible improvisation in a group setting and compositions that drew from all over the map, these Quartets smashed conventions and blew audiences away.
