Black 2: Broadway, the exclusive quarterly event honoring performers of color,
will celebrate the African-American
community's Tony Award winners and nominees in conjunction with a live
viewing of the 2005 Tony Awards. The evening will be held at Live at Opia on Sunday, June 5th.
Live performances by past winners and nominees will be scheduled
during commercial breaks. Scheduled to perform are Melba Moore (1970
Tony Award, Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Purlie); Chuck Cooper (1997 Tony Award, Best Featured Actor in a Musical for The Life),
Lillias White (1997 Tony Award, Best Featured Actress in a Musical for The Life, multi-Tony Award Winner Hinton Battle (1991 Tony Award, Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Miss Saigon, 1984 Tony Award, Best
Featured Actor in a Musical for The Tap Dance Kid, 1981 Tony Award, Best
Featured Actor in a Musical for Sophisticated Ladies). Other performers have yet to be
confirmed.
A new scholarship fund which will also be announced; an award rent subsidy will be given to a deserving performer of color presented by Black 2: Work (Black 2: Broadway's non-profit partner), whose purpose is provide support to performers of color
in the form of rent subsidies, rehearsal and performance space and
educational scholarships.
B2: Productions, the show organizers,
have created a network of venues for professional performers of color
to help support the development of talent and the new theatrical works.
Black 2: Broadway is the model event, slated for cities across the
country. Sean Hollingsworth and Kevin-Anthony are the company's production partners.
