According to The National Enquirer and confirmed by PEOPLE and other sources, Barry Manilow and his longtime manager Garry Kief married in a private ceremony last April at their home in Palm Springs.

Manilow's neighbor Suzanne Somers was the best man, and Marc Hulett -- his assistant -- performed the ceremony.

The whole event was a surprise to their friends, who had been told they were attending a "lunch".

Manilow and Kief did not sign any official paperwork to avoid a news leak. But they do wear wedding bands and "are committed to one another and have been for a very long time," a source told People. "They have a great relationship. Garry has always been there for Barry."

The same source went on to say that Manilow has no reason to hide his sexual orientation, despite the singer's worries his fans might not approve of him being gay. "He's at a point now where he's got his career and personal life in a great place and he really doesn't care what people think," the source said. "He's in love and happy."

Manilow has yet to comment.

Manilow's new musical HARMONY debuted last year in Los Angeles. He has appeared in three solo shows on Broadway -- the most recent in 2013. He also did the orchestrations and arrangements for COPACABANA in the West End and was musical director for BETTE MIDLER on Broadway and off-Broadway's THE DRUNKARD, for which he also wrote the music and lyrics.
