BMCC Theatre Program Mainstage Looks at Issues Along the Mexican Border in 14 Image

The Borough of Manhattan Community College, City University of New York The Department of Speech, Communication & Theatre Arts, The Office of Academic Affairs, & The Tribeca Performing Arts Center with aid from the BMCC Foundation present "14" by José Casas

In 14, Playwright José Casas exposes the horrors of the treacherous journey across the Mexican border. The play is inspired by a true-life event in which a smuggler abandoned 20 Mexicans crossing the desert near Yuma, Arizona, resulting in 14 immigrants dying of dehydration. Casas traveled to Arizona to conduct interviews, and document stories about this injustice. It is these public accounts of Arizonans and their different attitudes towards the contemporary issues of undocumented immigration that comprise the play. 14 holds a mirror to our society, and its contentious relationship with the Mexican border. BMCC Professor Daphnie Sicre, directs the production as the first person in the history of the BMCC theatre program to be responsible for staging a Latinx play, which directly addresses issues facing that community. In staging 14, BMCC's theatre program continues its commitment in displaying professionally produced theatre that not only entertains, but also is socially relevant, and politically conscious. The cast and crew are largely an assemblage of present and past BMCC/CUNY students and faculty. The creative design team includes Assistant Direction by Dania Miguel, Stage Management by David Givens, assisted by Dominic Crescente, Dramaturgy by Bertie Ferdman, Sound Design by Saundrell Davison, Scenic Design by Elizabeth Chaney, Lighting Design by Alex Dheming, Projection Design by Jermaine Rowe, Graphic Design by Norris Girdy, and Costume Design by Vanessa Leuck.
