For one night only on July 26th, writer-performer Kirya Traber will present OVERHEARD at Dixon Place, New York City's laboratory for experimental performance.

In the brand-new solo show OVERHEARD, Traber embodies 18 characters on a subway ride across New York City, where pre-conceptions of gender are challenged and redefined. Public and private collide as strangers encounter an unconventional individual who challenges their fundamental ideas of what it means to be female, to be Black, and to be an artist. Through hauntingly honest character monologue, personal narrative, dance, and song, Traber, with director Sara Lyons, asks how the smallest moments of personal choice can define our experience in a world of predetermined roles. With style, poetry, wit, and courage, OVERHEARD dares to expose a universe of complexity in a single body.

"With our shared roots in both queer performance and traditional theater, Traber and I are thrilled to have joined forces to bring this daring and poetic storytelling to stages across the five boroughs, and to Dixon Place, the legendary home of new Queer performance," says director Sara Lyons. "OVERHEARD challenges audiences to see Traber, and one another, with new eyes; ultimately, we hope it will help build stronger, more understanding communities across New York City."

"The most daring thing I've ever done is take the train to work."
