Anton, a new play exploring playwright Anton Chekhov's search for love and happiness through his work and his relationships, written by Pierre Van Dur Spuy, will be presented at the Greenwich Street Theatre (547 Greenwich Street between Charlton and Vandam Streets) in January. The production previews on Tuesday, January 10th at 8:00 p.m. and opens on Wednesday, January 11th at 8:00 p.m. Performances run Wednesdays though Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. through January 29th.

The play, while based on actual events, also employs scientific research in child development to tell the story of the life of Anton Chekhov and the family tensions that inspired his work and his well-known characters. Chronicling the last four years of Chekhov's life as he moves from ecstatic lover to frustrated husband to disappointed father and finally to a man facing his own mortality, the play examines the role of intellect and culture to affect man's ability to change and find happiness in everyday life.

Playwright and director Van Der Spuy is a medical doctor with clinical experience in rural South Africa, rural Canada, and London, England. He received his MBA from Yale University in 1997 and worked as a strategic management consultant in Manhattan, New York, before finding his passion in the theater. As a consultant, his study on the impact of emotional intelligence on R&D productivity was distributed widely within the biopharmaceutical industry. Anton is his third play.

Featured in the cast are Loyita Chapel, Ana Kearin Genske, Jim Heaphy, Lee Kaplan, Kent Langloss, Shelley Phillips, Van Der Spuy and Jamison Vaughn.

The design team includes sets by Sarah Phykitt, lights and technical directing by Jessica Lynn Hinkle and costumes by Katie Stults.

Tickets are $15.00 for general admission and $10.00 with student ID. TDF accepted. For reservations, please call Theatermania at (212) 352-3101 or purchase tickets online at
