Happy birthday to one of the greats!

Legendary American triple threat performer known for his roles in musical movies SINGIN' IN THE RAIN and AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, Gene Kelly, would be celebrating his 103rd birthday today. So of course, the Broadway cast of AN AMERICAN IN PARIS took today to tribute the actor.

"Happy Birthday to my hero! Mr. Kelly thank you for everything!@americaninparis," writes AN AMERICAN IN PARIS star Robert Fairchild on an Instagram post. Fairchild's co-star, Leanne Michele Cope, tweeted, "Happy Birthday #GeneKelly how lucky we are to go to work @AmericanInParis and perform on what would of been his 103 birthday."

Gene Kelly was an American dancer, actor, singer, film director, producer and choreographer. He was known for his energetic and athletic dancing style, his good looks, and the likeable characters that he played on screen.

Best known today for his performances in films such as An American in Paris (1951), Anchors Aweigh (1945), and Singin' in the Rain (1952), he was a dominant force in musical films until they fell out of fashion in the late 1950s. His many innovations transformed the Hollywood musical and he is credited with almost single-handedly making the ballet form commercially acceptable to film audiences. Kelly received an Academy Honorary Award in 1952 for his career achievements. He later received lifetime achievement awards in the Kennedy Center Honors (1982), and from the Screen Actors Guild and American Film Institute. In 1999, the American Film Institute also numbered him 15th in their Greatest Male Stars of All Time list.

Inspired by the Academy-Award winning film,An American in Paris brings this classic tale to Broadway for the first time with music and lyrics by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin, a book byCraig Lucas and direction and choreography by Christopher Wheeldon. An American in Paris has just won four 2015 Tony Awards. The hit musical has also won four Drama Desk Awards and four Outer Critics Circle Awards including Best Musical, the Drama League Award for Best Musical, three Fred and Adele Astaire Awards and two Theatre World Awards.

An American In Paris is the romantic story of a young American soldier, a beautiful French girl and an indomitable European city, each yearning for a new beginning in the aftermath of war.
