The American Documentary Film Festival was started in 2011 to celebrate and promote documentary film - and the independent filmmakers around the world who bring knowledge and awareness through their stories about real people and issues. The Festival screened more than thought provoking, entertaining and unforgettable films set across six screens in theatres in Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert, attracting thousands of visitors over the Festival's five-day period, as well as over 150 filmmakers and industry guests from all across the U.S. and around the world.

George Takei is known around the world for his founding role in the acclaimed television series Star Trek, in which he played Hikaru Sulu, helmsman of the Starship Enterprise. From a childhood spent with his family wrongfully imprisoned in Japanese American internment camps during World War II, to becoming one of the country's leading figures in the fight for social justice, LGBTQ rights, and marriage equality, Takei remains a powerful voice on issues ranging from politics to pop culture. Takei recently completed a run in the Los Angeles premiere of the Broadway musical Allegiance, reprising his roles from the Broadway production, on which ALLEGIANCE to Broadway was made.
