30 Days Of NYMF: Day 8 POPart: The Musical

By:

POPart: The Musical

-Daryl Lisa Fazio, lyricist/librettist

Art doesn't have to mean that dud of an art history course you took in college, right after lunch, in the dark, looking at fuzzy slides of one 15th century depiction of Jesus after another, accompanied by the somnambulistic drone of a professor you could swear had been pilfered from Madame Tussaud's Pretentious Public Speakers Wax Museum.

Yeah, we were all in that class too.

You can have your art served hot and pop-style with a side of coming-of-age and a tall glass of kook. THAT'S what pop art is, see? It's art you can get close to, art you can get, art that takes the everyday stuff of YOUR life and makes it something special.

If you've always wondered what it's like to create, this show'll put you there, with all its knee-knocking terror of the unknown and euphoric flash of discovery. If you've been to art school and no one's ever believed your stories, this will bring them to all-too-bright light.

I have seen and done these things. And THIS, if I had left the suburbs, a gay father and a perpetually-schnockered mother to attend a neon-blazed urban art program where I met students dressed like paintings, teachers strutting like peacocks and homeless people who seem to know a little too much, all while singing and dancing to pop-infused high-octane melodies backed by a chorus of Rothkos and prostitutes, would be my story.

It can be yours too. Our heroine, Kitty Katz, would love for you to come. She might even hide behind you, if things get a little too scary.
