WHORTICULTURE, a confrontational tragicomedy, written by Emma Goldman-Sherman transfers to Dixon Place for a one night only event at Dixon Place, Friday October 20 at 7:30 pm.

Developed with the 29th Street Playwrights Collective, WHORTICULTURE was presented as a staged reading in their New Works Series this past June.

Using a non-traditional structure, WHORTICULTURE explores the darker roots of the way girls grow up in America challenging our social media, pop music, racist, rape culture. Cynthia Granville, Artistic Director of The Supporting Characters theatre company, will direct.

Sarah Kiefer, Twinkle Burke and Teresa Hui reprise their roles as Indigo, Belladonna and Larkspur, three girls who, after discovering they are named for poisonous flowers, form a club. Explicit content.

Sarah Kiefer was last seen in Atar Hadari's, Merciful Father, with UP Theater Company and is one half of the performance duo, The Sisters of the House of Mercy.

Twinkle Burke has performed at The Public Theater, Virginia Stage Company and The Dorset Theatre Festival, where she won the audience award for Best Actress, and will be appearing in the upcoming 29th Street Playwrights Collective New Works Series in SURVIVORS on Oct 16 at Bernie Wohl Center.

Teresa Hui is a singer/actress/comedian who has appeared at 54 Below, Cutting Room, Don't Tell Mama, Duplex, Triad, Laurie Beechman, Metropolitan Room, New York Comedy Club, UCB East, and placed 3rd at Amateur Night at Showtime at the Apollo.

Emma Goldman-Sherman has been three times named a "Risky Playwright" by Cutting Ball Theatre of San Francisco for WHY BIRDS FLY, ABRAHAM'S DAUGHTERS (seen last year at Urban Stages' Lady Liberty Festival to combat Islamophobia and also at Intersections International), and now for WHORTICULTURE.

Emma Goldman-Sherman has received the Jane Chambers Award for PERFECT WOMEN, and the Richard Maibaum Award for plays addressing social justice. She is the founder of the 29th Street Playwrights Collective and runs the Write Now Workshop to develop new work for the theatre. She has taught playwriting and poetry/spoken word to adults and at-risk youth via New York Writers Workshop and at the Great Plains Theatre Conference where she has worked as a dramaturg. Recent plays include "COUNTING IN SHA'AB" produced by Golden Thread Productions in San Francisco as part of the 2015 ReOrient Festival of plays about the Middle East.

Tickets are $15 advance, $18 at the door and available at dixonplace.org/performances/whorticulture. Dixon Place is located at 161A Chrystie Street on the Lower East Side. Get a WHORTICULTURE pen by donating to the Whorticulture Indiegogo campaign!
