The Soldier’s Tale (L'Histoire du Soldat) by Igor Stravinsky is based on the Russian tale, “The Runaway Soldier and the Devil.” It was written in 1918, as jazz was just beginning. Stravinsky uses tango rhythms, marches, and a waltz to tell the Faustian story of a soldier who trades his violin to the Devil for untold wealth. The four performers in this dramatic piece, the soldier, the devil, the princess and a narrator, share the stage with seven musicians: a violin, bass, clarinet, bassoon, cornet, trombone, and percussion. The intimate space and beautiful acoustics of the Kettle Moraine Playhouse create the perfect venue for this haunting tale. This production is a unique collaboration between the Kettle Moraine Symphony Orchestra and the Kettle Moraine Playhouse. One weekend only, three performances, January 31-February 1.
