Cikiuteklluku (Giving Something Away) explores the subject of Native adoption. Native adoption to non-native persons is a hotly contested subject in Alaska. There is one faction that believes it is what is best for the child and the others that believes it will result in the loss of native culture and "brain drain" from the villages. The play also touches on contemporary subjects of substance-abuse and teen angst (Yupik Style).

In Cikiuteklluku (Giving Something Away) Liza Toopetluk, a young girl from rural Alaska, faced with an unwanted pregnancy must choose between giving her baby to family members (adopting in) - and restricting her child to a life in the village, a life she herself is trying to escape or adopting her baby out to a Caucasian family, which may secure more opportunity for the child but will surely result in 'giving away' the values and lifestyles of her Yupik culture.
