The Studio Theatre, 320 W 7th St, in Little Rock, heats things up with ONCE ON THIS ISLAND THE MUSICAL now through June 23. Join them as they take you through a tropical fairytale full of romance, magic, and tragedy. With Book and Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, Music by Stephen Flaherty, and Direction by Caelon Colbert, and based on Rosa Guy's 1985 novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl, a Caribbean retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, you will fall in love with these characters as they struggle through trauma, social status, and colorism. 

It was a hot day with the heat index reaching 100 degrees for the kick-off of the 2024 Webmonster Concert Series at Magic Springs Theme and Water Park, 1701 East Grand Ave, in Hot Springs, with Arkansas band de France opening for the Spin Doctors Saturday, June 8. Still, what better place is there to watch an outdoor concert than at Magic Springs? You can play in the water and ride the rides with the wind blowing in your face for hours before the show starts. Then spread out your blanket or sit on your lawn chair on the grass inside the fences of the Timberwood Amphitheater, which Magic Springs had looking like some of the best Arkansas golf courses you can find. It is such an inviting venue to soak up the sun and some amazing music.

Heart wrenching. Intoxicating. Love. Courageous. These performers in 26 PEBBLES with the Actor Theatre of Little Rock put out a powerful performance, and they still have a few more days to go.

We here at Broadway World love to celebrate, and this time it was my birthday. So what did I do to party? I went to Brookstock Events’ Open House in Dover Saturday, May 25, to check out their venue and to see my friend DONNIE LEE STRICKLAND perform for the attendees, and we all had the best time. With free hot dogs, water, friends and the whole place singing happy birthday to me, there was no better way to celebrate.

At the end of the school year, The Red Curtain Theatre, 913 W Oak Street, in Conway, puts together a program to spotlight what their students have learned over the year. They have voice lessons, dance in all styles, and musical theatre class for students of all ages including adults, done by professionals that truly care about their budding artists. This year, their finale was themed THE ODYSSEY, which was Produced by Kristen Dickerson and Emceed by Kurt Baumann and performed Thursday and Friday, May 23rd  and 24th.  It had variety with great costumes and an eclectic cohesiveness throughout the storytelling.

First performed in 1895, Director Roger Eaves captures the play’s purpose of satirizing the social norms and conventions of Victorian society, while embracing his cast’s cuteness factor. What did our critic think of BRIGHT STAR at Red Curtain Theatre? Intimate size theatres are my newest favorite way to watch shows, so when I heard that Red Curtain Theatre, 913 W Oak Street, in Conway, was bringing BRIGHT STAR to their newly remodeled performance area May 3-5 and May 10-12, I was intrigued.

Along with this anniversary, we are thrilled to introduce our new UCA Public Appearances logo which celebrates the growth we have had with the addition of the Windgate Center for Fine and Performing Arts.

Broadway World went on a hunt for the bare necessities when we traveled to Sheridan to see The Grant County Theater’s presentation of THE JUNGLE BOOK Friday, May 10, but instead found all sorts of wild thespians taking the stage. Written by Joseph Robinette and based on the book by Rudyard Kipling, this play was not exactly like the Disney version, but it still had a lot of the familiar characters.  It was a packed house, and rightfully so. This theater grabs you when you walk into the door.  

Broadway World saw the tiniest Annie at Studio 42 & Co. production of ANNIE in the Adams-Vines Recital Hall on the Arkansas Northeastern College in Blytheville May 5. However, though seven-year-old Darby Carter was small, she proved that she could stand as tall as the rest of the cast as she belted out her signature song Tomorrow.  

My favorite beauty pageant by far is in AMERICAN BEAUTY, which was presented at The Weekend Theater, 1001 W 7th St, Little Rock, April 19-May 5. With Music and Lyrics by Arkansan Michael Rice (born in Monticello and has since conquered the Broadway world), this musical celebrates the participants both on and off the pageant stage with all of its complexities that goes with it. It was humorous, the music brought out all the emotions, and the girls were absolutely amazing!
