The UK tour of William Finn's Tony Award Winning musical comedy - 'The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee', starring Darren Day and Niki Evans, has been cancelled following its first two stops. According to the offfcial website of the Connaught Theatre, the full tour, including stops in Barnstaple, Kettering, High Wycombe, Crawley, Blackpool, Jersey and Eastbourne have been cancelled due to a lack of funding.

***The tour is playing fairly obscure venues, which mustn't helped.***

Yes, heard about this earlier today. It's really depressing and worrying for the industry. I feel especially for Darren Day as this is now the second show he's been cast in during the last few months that has been cancelled due to "lack of funds" - the other was the tragic fiasco of The Golden Voice at the Arts Theatre.

Sad to hear when a show is cancelled. Although Darren Day isn't a box office draw these days, if he ever was. I saw him in a tour of Carousel years ago and he was the weakest link singing wise.

Nothing about this was a box office draw. The show was (unfairly, IMO) derided during its Donmar run, spelling bees are virtually unheard of in the UK, and it was touring to venues with totally the wrong audience profile for the show or cast. Not a well planned tour - it's interesting that they got the rights, in a way, given how notoriously few productions there are of Bill Finn's shows over here.

The Vice Principle doesn't really sing...

I found the venue choices odd. Shame really as gather this was a nice production at Edinburgh Fringe.

Arts Ed produced a terrific production earlier this year.

I'm crying out for someone to stage Falsettos...

Saw the production they did at the Edinburgh Fringe and it was excellent. Couldn't see what Day and Nicki Evans would have added apart from being 'names' (or not). Seen very little marketing for this and the sales at liverpool looked pretty dire.

Real shame, such a fun show and good production.

It was good for the Fringe, but with delusions of grandeur, I'm afraid.

Happens very often- I cite Molly's Wobbly Boobs as another example but there have been so many over the years.

I really enjoyed Spelling Bee, when I saw it on Broadway, but the Donmar Warehouse production seemed to be pallid.

The general consensus on this thread is that this tour was poorly produced, it would of been better off playing universities, with the odd theatre town thrown in. saying that it isn't easy being a producer and also must be awful for all the staff involved.

I had tickets for Blackpool.
My friend was playing Leafy Coneybear - he is gutted about the tour, understandably.
I'm disappointed this show isn't getting the exposure it deserves :/
