The play follows a group of Catholic schoolgirls in 1957. The play was first performed at the Royal Court in 1977, directed by Mike Ockrent. O'Malley was the theatre's resident dramatist that year. The production then transferred to Wyndham's Theatre in the West End, where it ran for more than two years.

ONCE A CATHOLIC is set to move to The Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool from January 22, with hopes for the West End.

Burke is well known for her film work in Kevin and Perry Go Large and in the sitcom Gimme Gimme Gimme, as well as appearances on TV's French and Saunders, Absolutely Famous and Harry Enfield and Chums. She has been nominated for six BAFTA awards. Beginning in 2001, Burke began directing for the theatre full-time. Her productions include Out in the Open, Born Bad, and Love Me Tonight for The Hampstead Theatre, Kosher Harry for the Royal Court.
