Stage and screen star Billie Piper has signed on for a modern adaptation of Federico Garcia Lorca's YERMA, running this summer at the Young Vic from July 28 to September 24, 2016.

The original play tells the story of a childless woman living in rural Spain who becomes so obsessed with motherhood that it eventually leads her to commit a horrific crime.

The DOCTOR WHO actress told the Daily Mail that the play, which will be set in contemporary London by playwright Simon Stone, is "hugely relevant in our modern world of female pressure, expectations, and love lost as a result." She added that it will be "another sad yet beautiful observation of men and women, and the stuff that sets us apart."

Stone, behind the upcoming film THE DAUGHTER with Geoffrey Rush and Miranda Otto, will also direct the production.

Piper is best known for starring as 'Rose Tyler' on the long-running BBC series DOCTOR WHO. She also appeared for three seasons as sultry escort 'Hannah/Belle de Jour' in the provocative Showtime comedy series SECRET DIARY OF A CALL GIRL, as well as the horror series PENNY DREADFUL. The actress has also been recognized for her work on stage in TREATS and REASONS TO BE PRETTY. She earned an Olivier Award nomination for her turn as "Connie" in THE EFFECT and recently starred at the National in GREAT BRITAIN.
